Thumbs up Want to create a website, where can I get decent free hosting?

I plan to make a website and need a host that allows me to place my own code and pick a domain. I don't want one of those template sites that cover you in ads. Anyone have experience in this? All information helps. I'm just starting to teach myself web development.

I'd suggest http://www.000webhost.com for the hosting and http://www.dynadot.com for the domain.
There used to be something meaningful here.

The best that I have found is github..

    http://pages.github.com/

It's free.. and it's fairly fast and responsive.. so why not right?

I tried it but how do I sign up for a account? I don't see where to register?

Once you choose a domain name you should see this at the bottom of the page. Click sign up.

Pretty new to GitHub because I just registered. Does it compile so I can see what it looks like?

Not sure what you mean by "compile" I haven't really heard of websites being compiled since JSP and ASP.

If you mean by "are you able to view it", the answer is then yes. Yes you can see what your website looks like.

Here is a look at my 1st year HTML project: http://brandon-t.github.io/ArtOfCPlusPlus/ and the source code was simply uploaded to github like so: https://github.com/Brandon-T/ArtOfCPlusPlus

It's a crappy first year project but its an example of a git-page..

Loads of examples on google. It supports various languages and features. That's about all I know. I haven't used it too much yet.

Alright can you dumb it down a little for me?
The pages.github says I need to do something in a text editor so I pirated Sublime text. I did some basic HTML and saved it. Now I can't put it into GitHub or really do anything with it... what do I do with my file?

edit: oops, didn't see you wanted free web hosting...I guess if you wanted to upgrade to vps, then consider those 2.

    VPS servers:
Digital ocean. (cheapest vps) Search for some coupons, they always have promotions going on. I got a 50 dollar credit from them when I signed up.

Linode is also good. (but 20 dollars a month)

I too can vouch for 000webhost. When I didn't have money for a domain years ago I used a co.cc domain.

If all else failed I could offer you a spot on my VPS, depending on what you plan on doing with your project. The whole setup is pretty basic at this stage, as my VPS is only used for a blog and educational use. I don't even have FTP yet..

But if you run out of options feel free to pm me, we might be able to work something out.

i suggest going to namecheap.com to buy the domain.

Host it for FREE on an EC2 instance on amazon(their lowest and free tier) or try out openshift!!!

Here's a piss simple guide to getting node.js running on an amazon EC2 instance: http://www.lauradhamilton.com/how-to...-on-amazon-ec2
