If you think you can do it without breaking anything, unscrew the case and clean out the dust from inside of it. It restricts airflow and insulates components.

Open it up, there might be dust clogging up the fan. And if you don't already have one, get one of the things that keeps it elevated so airflow can get under it. Laptops get really hot when on beds/any flat surface because there's no airflow under it.

I'll do this tommorow :/

Yeah that's why I said it was well ventilated, I have one of those laptop coolers which pump out air from the bottom to cool it down.

Mine overheated and turned off a few times. I ended up taking out the fan (which was a bit*h as I had to disassemble every last little thing to get the fan out) and it was blocked with 1cm thick dust. There was also no thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink (bloody HP) so I added some and put it back together. Running sweet as now :)

My GPU runs at 90°C when playing a game :O It is normal for nvidia I hope

in most cases if loptop is older then half year (specialy if you like to keep it in bed on knees, not on table etc) you should unscrew bottom case, and check green part since dust keep there since these part are made bad because of "duct tape" around it green mark in image
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/9582/r8x6.png I found this image at google, red text is written not by me :D

anyways if you gonna unscrew that, make sure you have some thermal pasta (you can buy that on ebay) < thermal pasta may be cause of overheating too if it's too old and dried out.

Dude. Monitor it with Speed fan and boot in safe mode. Do some reading on Speedfan and make the fan overwork. It will loosen the dust because of more RPM.

However get some compressed air and blitz out the fan.

is 74C really "overheating"?

That's like 165F. It'll start melting some stuff at that temperature and can definitely catch dust on fire.

I was just wondering because I know laptop get hotter while playing Minecraft or rendering a video or something like that.

This is just playing MC for a little while.

Now I'm concerned that I have been overheating my laptop since I got it .-.

Add some thermal paste to your cpu

Who exactly? Also mine is still under warranty so Dell would have to fix it.

Though this might not be the easiest way it might be the best.

If you can, underclock the CPU and preferable the GPU too.
Remember that your Motherboard might not support overclocking or underclocking.

My aspire 5472G, before cleaning the temperature reached well over 100 C. After cleaning rarely over 50 C.

Re-applied tape and got rid of the dust.(wasn't that much)

Sad image of how my laptop looked :(

edit:
Note that 74 C for you CPU is not special at all. If it is under load you can even call it low. Laptops are hotter than desktops. The arrandale is made to endurance some heat, as well as your motherboard.

Well I am not much expert in computers....so can't help to overheating solution but can you tell me how to check the temperature of computer from the windows? Please tell me about that software which can tell me about the CPU temperature.....

Well luckily for you I am an computer overheat expert! Multiple years of experience in toasting all kinds of CPUs and other parts.

I personally like CoreTemp, it does what you think it does. It is small and easy to use.

If you really was a expert in computer heat you would had said something along with this

"Download/Install the following:
CoreTemp
SpeedFan
CPU-Z
HWMonitor
And run DxDiag.Exe"

Nha just joking :P, but it's a great way to get as accurate as you can get values.

That is not overheating. Your computer is quite cold, this is what mine looks like when it is cool.

http://puu.sh/3u5SP.png

I already melted the CPU/Mobo/RAM once on it but it is currently running okay. I wouldn't worry too much since the thermal design temperature for most modern CPUs is at the range of 100-110C

Only reason my motherboard is cooler is that my computer does not use integrated graphics at all for some Dell reason, so all of the graphics processing and heat goes to the GPU.

Do what I do, raise it off the table. I keep it on an old cellphone I have. It adds 3/8 inch to the height. I believe it cools my pc down ~5-6C

Mother of god those temps!
Idle, everything on my computer is lower than your lowest temp (27c). under a full load, ill pull 60 on gpu and 50 on cpu max, (granted i keep ambient room temp at ~18c) but... my god. save yourself the trouble and ditch the laptop. get a desktop like a cool person.

90C for GPU is when you should start worrying, but if it only hits that, you should be "OK" if it starts going higher, clean that out.. (you should clean it out already, and don't play on any cloth type surface that keeps heat)

CPU's max TDP usually around 95C for intel, again, after like 90C I'd worry... hell, I don't let my stuff ever go above 65C :P good practice.
... GPU's max for nvidia current day is 115-120C

AMD is lower for CPU's last I checked.. and around the same for AMD radeon GPU's

Okay, here is my guide written especially for you:

How to open your laptop(5742)

First things first, unplug your power supply. Your laptop doesn't like it to be plugged in the back while being screwed on the bottom. It's not that slutty...

Unscrew all screws at the bottom. They aren't hard to find and none are hidden. Make sure you remove your hdd and that strange chip thing(idk what it is). You don't need to remove your memory, in fact remembering what you do now will ease up the assembly later on. If you did everything right you can lift up some of the edges already, however nothing should fall apart yet.

Flip your laptop keyboard up. Note these small little thingies on top (and 2 on the sides) of your keyboard. Press them with something small and whip up your keyboard. Note that you can use anything small. Like a pair of scissors(or your penis). Disconnect your keyboard and you should now have disassembled you keyboard. This is a great moment to clean it. Yeah.. really, clean that thing.

Unscrew and disconnect everything you can(if you are bad with unscrewing, unscrew more than you can). You should now be able to lift of the top of your laptop(with the speakers, touchpad etc... Computer lovers usually call this step second base. (I am aware most laptops are under legal age, but you gotta love those new chips!).

You should now see your motherboard. Look carefully what needs to be disassembled to remove it. But as soon as you can, remove your motherboard and put it upside down on something not metal/static or hot(like your heater or your gf).

Remove all the dust, small insects, tarantulas and that sister of you that went missing two years ago from the places where I applied white dots. I also re applied tape on the second row of dots. Apparently they fucked that up on my laptop.

Assemble!
