I'm building my first desktop in a couple weeks! Let me know what you guys think about this setup. I'm planning on a xeon processor with that gpu for hyperthreading and some sexy graphics :)

0/10 needs SSD

e: oh and Intel's stock CPU fans are garbage, so maybe throw a better one in

Other than that it should be able to crush anything you throw at it

I have the option to put in an SSD still. I'm 98.946% convinced but I have another week to decide when I order parts :D

+1 ; SSD is a must nowadays.

I wouldn't not have a SSD, when I move from my desktop to my laptop (which I haven't put one in yet) I feel as though i'm waiting forever!

SSD's are love (SSD's are life) mate, it's like 300MBs+ read a second. In that respect they're at least 5, if not 10x faster than an HDD!

Shrek making an appearance today? ha!

I personally have steered away from Intel and moved to AMD (2 years ago)

I own an AMD A10-4600M, quad-core processor and dual graphics HD 7660G + HD 7670M for gaming needs.

I personally prefer to use AMD over Intel now as they seem to be making a rise back and taking over the monopoly of Intel/Microsoft deal!

The setup you have looks good though.

As the guys have said, get yourself an SSD, you will notice a massive difference and won't regret paying a bit extra!

Quotes happen if you start to drink the belgian beer :D

I just really, really hope this is an unfounded rumour: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/3bjjcq/microsoft_is_interested_to_buy_amd/

SSDs are nice and flashy (pun intended) but I hope to hell you have a legacy HDD for data backup -- SSDs can and do fail, and once they do, your data is 100% kaput, no chance of recovery.

Flash technology: either your data is there or it's not.

why do many people here prefer xeon over i5/i7 lines?

Because the xeon e3-1230v3 is basically an i7 for a fraction of the cost, and the only difference is it does not have integrated graphics. But I don't care because I'm going to get my own gpu!
