Where do you think the Oculus Rift will be in three years time?

Tried it at a retail store yesterday and got motion sickness from the dinosaur trying to sniff my face.

Wonder if this will be the new way to game, if we can have accompanying control senses etc. I was amazed by the tech, and think in my own house, could b a rather intimate experience.

I've tested HTC Vive/Steam VR set on a conference last month. I was blown away by the experience and quality. I have tested the occulus at dreamhack back in 2013 and it was meh meh. This one had pristine quality, everything was so close to reality. I think in three years, many gamers will have a treadmill and a VR set. In the demo, I got on a underwater tour, painted in 3d and got to play a zombie survival shooter. More games will be created and -- the biggest market for VR -- will be VR in assisting people having issues with e.g. heights or simply want to learn something. A robot has infinite patience so this will be perfect for them.

Thanks for that janbricky,

I'm truly excited by the future prospects of this technology. I wonder how it will sync with our entire body and not just our eyes!

These sort of "future" predictions always make me laugh. Time and time tells that these don't work out. I for one believe that this thing is just another little accessory to your gaming experience and while it may enhance it, I highly doubt that it would ever become more than just an accessory. VR for education does however excite me, but I have yet to grasp practical uses in that department.

The Moveo Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing technology for orthopedic surgery, created a training project that lets medical students get a first-person view of an actual surgery.

In June, the group used a dual camera system attached to a doctor's head at the European Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris to capture a hip surgery as it happened.

Then the recording was optimized for the Rift, allowing students to look around the operating room. Students can view the surgery through the VR headset, or turn their head to see what the nurses are doing.

Moveo hopes the experiment can train future surgeons and also help experienced doctors learn new techniques by stepping into the virtual shoes of another surgeon.

There are many applications outside gaming, yes. People with fear of heights and other traumas will certainly benefit from this technology. VR teaching is also under development. While my statement may make you laugh regards gaming, have you tried it yourself? This wasn't just an 'accessory' but a very, very different experience altogether. Calling it an accessory doesn't even do it justice, calling it an extension wouldn't even. It really is something different.

Virtual Reality's biggest industry is the pornography industry. NOT gaming.

Finally, in three years time, that's exactly where it'll be because no one cares about VR. At least I don't. Augmented reality is where it's at.

I was going to sarcastically allude to this. VR porn is pretty ... neat(?)

Lol. It's probably something everyone's thinking, but don't want to say (taboo). I'm just blunt that's all.

Yeah it's neat apparently. I don't exactly know since I haven't experienced it (I did experience Augmented Reality Glasses though). However, my coding partner at work, has a buddy that worked on Oculus and got invited to a demo; the FIRST thing he tried, was VR porn.

His description was: "It was so amazing. It's actually like you're in it. It's revolutionary". Ahaha. I bursted out with laughter at "revolutionary". Nevertheless, he backed the kick-starter and got one for free. Other buddy ordered one for $950 CAN.

As soon as people can stream VR videos (any kind of VR video) without murdering bandwidth and with decent quality and 360 rotation, I'm pretty sure that industry will adapt. Youtube will probably adapt too. We have one of those weird google cardboard box glasses at work. It's pretty neat.

That's an interesting perspective.

My problem with the Occulus rift is it looks ugly as hell. Who would want to game with friends around wearing that thing? While porn-watching though, I'd guess it'd matter far less.

Why would it matter how it looks if your friends will also be wearing it when you play together haha

Looks almost always matter in everything sadly. Who wants to strap on this huge gaudy thing to their face every time the want to play some VR? It's just asking for someone to do lewd things in front of your face without you knowing on top of just being ugly.

I'm sure a certain subset of people, very likely the type of people who join this community probably don't care; however, you'll find that the average Joe absolutely does. A simple case is when people preferring up macs/Apple products in general when they tend to be far over-priced and not significantly better than or ahead of their competition since Jobs died; however, they do look quite a bit better/sleeker/etc...
