How to choose computer monitor

I'm buying a monitor for http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51-r3/pd.
My previous purchases have all been laptops so i have no idea what to look out for.

The specs all appear to be similar to me yet the price gap is so huge.

My priority is speed/performance (for gaming/game development), any tips on how i should choose?

Ultra WQHD - is currently the highest resolution being at 4k "DPI" - 4 times that of 1080 DPI

The curved ones look flash.

they are about 600-700 AUD - 500ish USD for 27 inch - this one is 34 inch

** I have yet to look at refresh rates; i believe these are more advanced LCDs - I will try to remember to report back.

Best monitor with resonable ratio of price and quality is BenQ xl2411z (benq.com/gaming-monitor/xl2411z). You won't dissapoint.

What part of game development are you interested in?
Maybe you need high pixel density? Or a high refresh rate? If you need both be prepared to pay up..

Have a look for eizo and NEC, if you are commited to game dev! :)

If this is so, you should probably invest in a TN panel type monitor. I have a TN panel Asus vx238 for gaming and an IPS monitor for watching movies/computing with better colors.

TN panels are alot cheaper, faster, but the colors aren't as vivid as an IPS or 4k monitor

My suggestion is 2 :D one for more chill games (ips/4k) and a TN for the faster paced games (fps, overwatch, lol)

Chose it because it has 2560x1440 resolution, but i ended up setting it to 2048x1152 anyway for bigger font size lol.

I would have gone for a 144hz monitor if you are looking to game, the difference is amazing. Look into them if theres still time to cancel your order, they are defo worth it. I would also look for a monitor with a lower response time, 6ms is a little high for gaming, but wouldn't make a huge difference; unless you are playing highly competitive games (e.g. CSGO).

I disagree. I have the Acer Predator XB271HK 27".
Possibly one of the best monitors I've ever purchased. The only issue I have with it is that it does NOT overclock and has a max refresh rate of 60Hz. Other than that, it is a great monitor. I even wrote a review on the amazon page :)


They do have a HIGH QA issue but once you get a GOOD one (I was lucky, got it on my first try), you won't regret it.

I simply went with a 27 inch acer. I'm looking to get dual monitors, maybe triple but obviously I need a better desk for that. Any suggestions?

I've had the same 2 ASUS monitors (23", 5ms GTG) for almost 5 years now and I've had zero issues with it. I would like to upgrade within the next few months to a 144hz 1ms though.
