View Full Version : OMFG! Turn gigabytes into megabytes!

Introduction:
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you one of the greatest programs ever made: Peazip. Before you go "OMFG GAY NAME LOLZ0RS", know that this program is basically Winrar on steroids. I have made this guide for those who have a massive crapload of stuff on their harddrive and want to get rid of it, etc.

Note that this doesn't work as well with media (video, audio). It works much better with programs.

What this program does:
-Converts large files into small files so you can email them, whatever
-Good for putting tons of programs + games in a small file
Example: You're gonna reformat. You don't wanna download all your stuff g
onto your fresh harddrive. Solution? Download all your shit now, put all of it in a folder, then compress it using this program.

What this program does NOT do:
-Shrink your crap. Meaning that you can't shrink a 1GB iso into 4MB then play it. However, now you can email your whole game to others because it's only 4MB. All the other people have to do is install this program and extract the iso :)

Ok, how do I do this?

Download Peazip (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/peazip/peazip-1.8.1.bin.WINDOWS.exe)
Install Peazip
Run it, click on Add File or Add Folder
Navigate to your crap
Click on the down arrow next to the Pea icon
Archive Type: PAQ
Compression: Depends on your system. Start with 7 and work your way down until it doesn't give you a memory error. Don't choose level 8 unless you have a ton of RAM to spare.
Note: It will sit at the end for a REALLY long time. It's not frozen.
Your outputted file should be really tiny now. Feel free to do whatever with it.

To me this makes no cence, but im stupid so yea.

Tyvm, and to bobbo, when your hard drive is getting full, you compress some files and you will have more room in it!

Tyvm, and to bobbo, when your hard drive is getting full, you compress some files and you will have more room in it!

No no...this is basically turning your files into a very small .rar or .zip file. You still have to extract them to make them work.

Also, I had no idea it takes this long...I used compression level 7 and it took 12 hours to do what it shows in that pic.

Mr.Klean
07-13-2007, 03:33 PM
Well you would expect a long period of time do to its rewriting the whole file over and over to compress it. (I think)

Thanks, another compression program to add to my list :)

Sucks how long it takes to zip, but it's worth it!!! :D

07-15-2007, 08:26 PM
I doubt compression algorithms of that strength would work well. Most large files that you'd want compressed already have a significant amount of compression (Jpegs, Tarballs, Encoded Movies). While the large file benchmark (compressing 100 megabytes of wikipedia's text dump) may come out to 16 mb, other files that are already partially compressed will have less spectacular results.

Thats actually crazy.

How can 4 GB possibly fit into 10 Mb compressed?

It's hard to believe.

Mr.Klean
08-11-2007, 02:42 AM
Well believe it my friend. People use uncompressed files mostly because of the ease and quickness of use. They do this because if they used compressed files as a main source, you would have to decompress them each time you use them. I don't know exactly how it works, but I know a good idea.

CheetahNub
08-11-2007, 08:55 PM
Holy crap... How can that be possible? And how the heck can someone make a program like this?!?

Wow, I'm absolutely amazed!

how long did it take you, i tryed it on a 700mb file on conpressiom 8 and it took over 15 hours.

lolpie
08-14-2007, 02:04 PM
Yep, this is something you should leave running overnight. But I guess it's worth it if you wanna backup a 100GB harddrive and email it to yourself :)

08-14-2007, 06:25 PM
Ahh thats seems more simple lol. Cant you just defragment your computer sint that the same thing?

i think defragment just moves all your files on your harddrive to one spot.. so it doesnt have to look all around for them.

Thats actually crazy.

How can 4 GB possibly fit into 10 Mb compressed?

It's hard to believe.

Most likely not. There is a small chance the data is oriented in such a way that it could store it in 10mbs. That would be *extremely* lucky though.

For all of you going "~wewt omg tht's kewl!" It's like 10 years old news. And zip IS LAME.

Use tar.gz (tarballed then gzip'ed) Much smaller.

does it take as long to decompress as it does to compress?

Again, depends on the file.

i think defragment just moves all your files on your harddrive to one spot.. so it doesnt have to look all around for them.

No, as you write and re-write files, the actual memory *on* the harddrive will become fragmented, parts of a file in one spot, and part in another. (sometimes a file can have data in 100 different locations)

Defragging your HD means that the actual storage on the HD become streamlined. One file is in one large spot.

This means your harddrive won't have to spin and read so much. It will not take up any more space, it should actually remove a few kilobytes of data, caused by fragmenting (nothing that you need or want).

thats neat and all, but i sucks to zip and extract all the time this might be good for large companies who just store their data for storing purposes, but for us its easier to have it unzipped at all times on an external drive? good find though..i guess its pretty good with WoW...

basically Winrar on steroidsLOL

Ahh thats seems more simple lol. Cant you just defragment your computer sint that the same thing? (sorry if im replying to a really old post or something) reee, hey i know more then bh in some thing!! woot =p
no defragmenting is where you are taking files, lets say a, b, and, c and a is 1 gig and split in three parts all over your hard disc and so is b and c so when you defragment you take all the fragments, and piece them as whole, making programs run faster as your hard disc doesnt haveto find each part sepretly.
really only needed to be done one old comps with small hard discs the fragment large files.

This program certainly seems attractive but I really want to try this first on my other computer so it really works, atleast the way it works seems strange enough to be a bit cautious about this program, But after reading some comments in this thread it started to interest me a bit, will try it soon enough. If this works as the way I have imagined I have Finally found a solution how I can format my computer without losing all my important setup files.

Pretty sweet program, but while compressing the files, does it still allow programs to access singular files? IE, if i wanted to compress Command and Conquer : The first Decade, Which is a 10 Gig game (roughly,) into something smaller, could i still use the program if i didn't compress the EXE along with it? or do programs have to remain Decompressed for them to run properly?

Okay, I started to compress a folder arround 60 GB at 5 AM on 8/8/8.
A new window called "gwrap" opened, with a green status bar. now, 9/8/8, 9:30 PM the green bar is full (actually, it has been full for a day now i think) and in status it says "Running". Is this normal that it takes so long? And the program is running OK i guess, because i can still access to the Report tab. Pic below.

I just use WinRAR and it works fine for me, free, quick, may not compress as much as this does, but I have 2 hard drives, never takes more than a minute, and it handles like 20 different types of compressed file types. Amazing job though, your next goal is to probably try pt speed this up and release it, very cool.

IMHO, dont bother, get a big USB stick, or move the HDD, copy off and move back. It will be much quicker.

What you guys need to realize is that he used this on highly compressible media. I have no Idea what was in his my-documents but I would wager that it was a bunch of files with pretty much the same thing in them.

For most things, LZMA compression (7z) will be within about 5% of a PAQ compressed file. Plus have the benefit of fast decompression. (LZMA has a slow compression, fast decompression setup).

PAQ is the ultimate in lossless compression, their no doubt about that, however its biggest problem is that its compression time is just as long as its decompression time.

http://www.maximumcompression.com/data/summary_mf.php

The compression ratios of a random collection of files. LZMA has 72% compression ratio while PAC comes in around 80%.

This is an awesome program, but as everyone said, it takes a long time and uses a lot of ram.

But if you're going to reformat you're computer and only have a small 2gb flash drive to put everything in, then this program is the way to go.

Now I realize what boberman was talking about. It's taken about 30 minutes to compress 40MB. Not good.

How is this helpful though.. like what do you use it for, and is it safe.. like does it mess up your files or somethin..

Oh Noes! PIERATS!

The compression rate depends on the files being compressed.

From what Ive seen KGB is the best archiving software, but with good compression comes loooong waits.

4GB to 10MB, that is sweet!
If only there were ways to implement this into technology such as iPods and flash drives, much money could be saved. I'm sure one day it will be though.

It could be, but it's just way too slow for them to use.

Not to mention media (.mp3, .avi, .iso etc) is generally already quite compressed, so it won't make a big difference.

Well said. If this were to be put on an ipod, etc., it would make th ipod run very slow + it would compress more that 25% of the original size without altering sound quality if my calculations are right. This program is still very useful for reformating though. I wish I had this when I had to reformat my laptop. :duh:

Me and my terabytes of data have little use for this due to my extra space :D
I have 5.7TB of data and still 14.3TB of free-space on about 30 drives, so when I do have to reformat It doesn't take much to move the contents of that drive to another area, but thanks for this anyway!

Also, the new version that they have out doesnt even have the same options or anything.

I'm wondering how long compressing... 40gb worth of music and videos would take. I need to reformat, but only have a couple 16 or something gb sticks to use for storing it.

Do you got a computer in your "location" create a simple network set the options for file sharing to on and send your 40 GB to your fathers or some other PC in the network to that hard drive and then you have it back-upped.

I dont have another computer with 40gb of free space, I'm on our only decent computer
