Downgrade back to XP.

Run some anti -spyware/-virus scans. Defragment the harddrive. Clean up the background services. Any other basic computer maintenance you can come up with.
Other than that, there's not much I can recommend; I haven't used vista since beta 2.

Upgrade to a better OS (linux, FreeBSD)? Vista does perform very badly, I would simply not use it.

to all the people saying upgrade/downgrade, i cant, its not my computer, the parents paid good money for me to download vista from a torrent site and burn it to a cd :P
ive already disabled all unneeded background services, i do that whenever i install a new microsoft OS.
defragged
no virus

Most likely your system requirements dont meet it. Vista needs alot of RAM. I have it and works perfectly fine....

Alright, I'm good to go then. I have 1512mb of RAM, but I don't have much hard drive space on my C: drive.

lappy has 2 gig o ram.
if you read the first post, you will see it was working fine up until a few days ago, when it started performing quite badly. so it does meet req's

I've heard that it will work fine if you get all the updates. Do you have all the updates?

When I were on a computer camp for 7 days, there was this dude who had vista. It crashed atleast 5 times a day when we tried to play something in LAN :(
That's why I choose XP

I got another vista com.
It works perfectly fine, it has 2gb ram , 250gb hard disk, a good graphic card and 2.2 Ghz processing speed. However, when i play an mp3 music file with windows media player, it always hangs at the end of every song. Vista needs loads and loads of ram, i still prefer xp though.

Is this not a valid windows?
If its not from microsoft directly their may be many things on it.

kingarabian: you do not need a good GFX card with windows, onboard is fine.
the lappy has SIS chrome 9 GFX, more then enough for these types of apps.

Some of these have already been mentioned but I thought I would recap for late comers.
Thing to check:
The requirements for vista are fairly high.
Get yourself a good virus scanner and use it.
Get yourself a good firewall. Vista has one installed but I wouldn't trust it.
Spyware, get yourself several scanners, no scanner gets them all.
Give services a once over no need to go too deep.
Check installed apps. If the problem is new then you maybe you installed something that is misbehaving.
Check your system tray, you can usually find a hint there.
Of you could do it the easy way and check the task manager to see who is the hog.

especially when playing spider solitaire
thanks
All of Vista's games require a decent graphics/video card (they help to display all of the things you see on the screen) and having around 1gb of ram or higher also helps, if you don't have those requirements you will experience slow performance and some things might not even work. with XP though, you can have a piece of junk computer and it will still work ok.

hmm.. have u tried tweaking vista at all. i did it for xp and it makes it loads faster. just google search it maybe you might come across something good. I also know that vista uses lots of space for system recovery maybe if you disable that it will be faster?

Vista is a little slower but i think that vistas evrta features are worth a little lag if you look into the new features u willfind so many new things that help you out in the end i prefer vista over xp anyday.
