View Full Version : RAM needed for VMs?

Well my computer has 1GB RAM and I'm going to buy another GB. IS two GBs enough to run atleast one virtual machine pretty well (it would be TinyXP)? And if 1GB should run well, I think I did something wrong, it is VERY laggy and hardly works. Did I do something wrong in the setup? I think I remember seeing something in the setup saying something about RAM for the VM, I'm pretty sure I set for 128, is that the problem?
EDIT: Ok well I changed the RAM for the vm and it works fine now, but I can only run 1.

I have my ram set for 256mb for my vm. as RS likes to run close to 100mb of ram sometimes (your setup only leaving 28 megs free for everything else). Also remember to install VMTools. that takes care of the mouse/vid laggyness.

RAM is set at 512mb on my VM because my host seems to have sticky fingers over my RAM. (especially when I am playing CS 1.6 with a VM)
If it still lags install TinyXP as your main OS. This will cut down on your host stealing resources in attempt to run all of the unnecessary services and programs.

Hmm better not tinyXp as your main OS, they laft out alot you know, things like drivers for printers ETC.:duh:

Wow... RAM should see this :P ANyways If you have 1024 MB of Ram on your computer You could set the RAM on the VM as 512 and you will run perfectly fine as one of my other comps has only 512 RAM and runs itself fine.

so that means that if i have a 4gb ram i can probably run about 7 virtual machines

Hmm, ok so I should set it to 512MB. But leaving half of it for my main host, is that enough? My main is Windows Vista Home Premium, would 512 be enough or should I just wait untill I get the extra GB of RAM?
Btw I am using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
Haha yeah lol I didn't think about RAM from these forums when I made the title :D
EDIT: Well I tried putting 450 on, but it didn't even let it start, it gave me an error saying that the host system could not run it. Then I tried 400. It started, but got REALLY laggy on the host. Going to try 350 now...
EDIT2: 350 worked well on the VM but the host was still a little too laggy for my liking, so going to try 315 now...
EDIT3: Sweet, 315 RAM works pretty well, a little laggy on the VM but it's fine. Now I have another question. The Virtual PC 2007 screen where the other OS runs is very small. I know you can make it fullscreen, but that doesn't help, that doesn't do much, just stretches everything out. With this small screen, I can't see the whole rs screen. Is there any way to make it so that you can see the whole rs screen?

it may work best if you do it in multiples of actual ram, 128/256/384/512 etc. and remember to install VM tools. that allocates proper resources to the video adapters (if you have a lower end vid card this could be the problem)

Well I'm using Virtual PC 2007, not VMware or w/e. Is VM tools the same as 'Install or update Virtual Machine Additions'? I can't seem to find anything else like that. When I click that it tells me some stuff and asks if I want to continue, I click continue, then that's it. Did it actually install, or did something go wrong?

Umm, idiot. Are you too stupid to Google for drivers? Its not that hard, anyways multi boot. Have one boot that is just for macroing and the other for everything else.
Anyways TinyXP blows any other Windows OS out of the water.

My quad core Q6600 at 3.6ghz and 4gb of ram has no issue running any vm's, i suggest a decent dual core cpu and 2gb pref 4gb of ram

Probably none. Unless you don't mind both your host and VM being SUPER laggy.
(meaning it would take a few min just to open a program)

E6300 (C2D) here :( And 2 gigs, but it's fine for running my OS (I run a chestload of programs) and 2 (sometimes 3) VMs :D
Usually if you're just going to use the VM for Macroing use 256 MB + TinyXP
