View Full Version : A long road to a silent computer

WARNING! This story is real, everything told here DID happen :(.

Everyone I know in RL knows it, my computer makes much sound, way too much sound. Even more then the average car or bike, and enough to drive me crazy for like three years.
So one year ago I decided that this has to stop, I started to become mad. I went to some german guy, paid him some money and he gave me my brand new, ultra silent Cooler Master fan :garfield:
I was happy, as I could finally get my computer silent! No noise! No sound that dries me crazy! And I could leave it on overnight, or at least I thought so....
So I opened my Medion computer, to discover something terrible!
It doesn't have an ordinary socket 478 retention module, but some weird Medion thingy :(
So the fan was lieing, somewhere under the dust, until I went to the local computer store, together with an uncle as he had to buy a new computer (he's computer noob). And then I saw it: €5,- for a new, socket 478 retention module! Screws included :D
So today, I opened my computer and I thought, lalalalalala, remove the old fan, old retention module and install the new ones :) So I removed the fan, to discover the CPU sticked at it due to the thermal paste (sp?).
After some messing with a blowdryer, a needle, a little rope, and some brute force, I seperated them :) This took me 75 minutes.
It was dinner time right now, so I ate my dinner :)

I ate my dinner and continued to work on it. I removed the old retention module and accidentally a screw fell behind the motherboard :duh: Whatever I tried, I couldn't get it back, so I had to remove the whole thing (never did that before).
I disconnected all the wires, took the six screws that attached it to the case out, took a pic of the old situation and after some messing I completely removed the motherboard :)
I got the screw and put the motherboard back. This took my 60 minutes.

Ok, now the easy work came. Carefully I put in the new retention module, did some pins of the CPU right (they were bended ) and attached the CPU. I put the new cooler in the computer, after some messing I could secure (or whatever it is called) it to the CPU, and closed the computer.
Happily I connected all the wires, and turned the computer on. It didn't blow nor shortcircuit, but I heard a veeery familiar sound.
Hours of messing, hours spend, but IT DIDN'T HELP AT ALL!!!!!
My computer made and still makes exactly the same sound as before (however, it's a lot cooler according to speedfan :f:).

I don't know what part it could be, is it the HDD? The power supply? The graphics card?
The only thing I know, is that I'm still getting crazy of this sound!

Maybe you should stick your head inside the computer and listen to where the sound's coming from? :D

No, technically as a computer technician (me) mostly the sound came out from fan spinning as most the time HDD won't make you much noise at all and of the VGA card also won't make noise at all (thinking of the past product in the year where come the socket 478). Power supply fan won't get you much trouble so...

i suggest you do cleaning the dust rather changing new parts.

@Helbb88: it's the power supply fan :(

Oh well, let's continue this story:
yesterday I got my screwdriver again, and opened the computer. This time I decided to track the sound.
My first go was the HDD. I turned the computer off and took all of the cables out of it. Still made the same sound.
I did the same with the CD and DVD rewriter, still made the same sound.
I stopped the CPU fan manually, and it still made the same sound.

It can now either be my graphics card fan (really small, like 8mm, it's a Geforce 4 MX 460) or the power supply...

I suggest you don't touch the power supply unless you are capable of electronic background as the power supply contain lots of mechanism that will blow it and possibly the power supply fan was getting stuck with dirt, Not wise for you to touch the fan but instead of try open the power supply, why don't you sent it to shop for repair or change a new one.

i had the same exact problem a while back, and it was the power supply.
I replaced it with a fancy new 500W one and ive had no problems with noise since.

Well the comp is old, so I'm getting a new one soon :D
And the noise? It'll move to my little sister :) I don't feel like getting a 2000 volt shock when messing with the power :f:
