View Full Version : Russia Says It Is Ahead In Race To Put Man On Mars

Russia is leading the race to complete a manned mission to Mars and could land a Russian on the Red Planet by 2025, a leading scientist was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

"We have something of a head start in this race as we have the most experience in piloted space flight," the director of the prestigious Space Research Institute, Lev Zelyony, told Interfax news agency on Tuesday.

The goal of becoming the first country to land a human on Mars is "technically and economically achievable" by 2025, he said.

Mars is the most prestigious prize for the Russian space industry if it wants to boost the country's "scientific and political prestige" through manned space flight, he said.

"We lost the race to the moon," Zelyony said.

The United States achieved that goal on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon.

The last manned US mission to the moon was the December 1972 flight of Apollo 17.

Not completely proven.

But cool :) Good luck to Russia.

is it that iimportant who gets there first? i mean shouldn't all research be for the good of mankind, and not the good of a single country?

Um. What a blatant and ignorant waste of the worlds resources. Hey instead of trying to stop the ice caps from melting lets fly men on a 300 day trip there and a 300 day trip back to set foot on mars for maybe 30 minutes.

Sounds great. Maybe they should plant some trees while they're there lol and stabilize mars atmosphere so we can live there in 1000 years.

trees need more water :(
hows about a cactus! ...though does a cactus give off oxygen?
so then we could spend $40,000,000 on a robot that cuts the cactus and gets its water to water the tree that is giving off oxygen?

i'm all for space exploration, but first maybe we should fix earth so we dont need to colonize mars so quickly :(

Well, ever since the Germans figured out a way of whole-sale russian slaughtering, things have been different.

The US will win. We have Chuck Norris.

AznPrides are from Venus.

I think Russia is going to win, because their objective is to stick a man on Mars. Not necessarily to retrieve it. Them Russians'll try anything.

But seriously, when you can't save earth, why not move to Mars?

Because it's red and there's martians there.

Whatthehell is wrong with red anyway?

I'm thinking like..

After the atmosphere has stabilized.

Because it's smaller, very hot, and has no water?? I say move to Pluto. No school ftw.

Oh... If they don't want to retrieve the poor guy, I guess they will win.

Murderers.

Because it's smaller, very hot, and has no water?? I say move to Pluto. No school ftw.
1 - It is smaller by about 5% of Earth.
2 - It is very cold.
3 - It used to have water and recent discoveries suggest that there is water beneath the surface.

Well, NASA is building a project shuttle to send to Mars and have it completed by 2011. In fact, they're even building it as we speak.

And there are no proven discoveries of Martians on the surface. Unless you're talking about the movie Mars Attacks.

Besides, i like learning about space and i want to become an astrophysicist or an astronaut.

Well, good luck on discussing this topic.

what does getting to mars first get you? nothing other than mad people when the people onboard the shuttle dont come back.:(

people should be fighting over getting there second when the 1st people's attempts fail. Then if they fail people will be disappointed but nothing to blame from them and if they get it then they beat the 1st people. Which makes their getting there and back more of an accomplishment

EDIT: plus then it'll be safer for the people after the 1st try because they can improve on the 1st people's idea and there will be even less of a change of failure. So Being first is a really big risk.

I couldn't agree more.

I think they should focus on getting people back.

Isn't that kinda the most important part of space travel(s)?

I do agree but NASA are sending a large shuttle with 2 escorts on its wing with a supply shipment behind. All in a good formation. This is their plan, the supply ship and one escort will stay in a good orbit monitoring what is happening along with the previous satellites telling them what whether is ahead. While the main (large) shuttle and the other escort shuttle will land. After completing that mission and taking some rocks they're going to add new and more advanced equipment into the previous satellites which are currently orbiting Mars and also to recover the lost Mars Rovers.

If the mission to Mars is successful, NASA's next primary mission is to go to the moon Titan which is orbiting the planet Saturn.

In fact, i do not like the idea about which countries get where first. I believe it should be a team project where the world's best scientists, split them into groups and let the first group build the Shuttles and Ships first then the second group to fix any errors.

Personally, i hate the idea of getting where first. Read the above.

I'm pretty sure NASA already has that going on dude.

And EvilChicken.. do you really want Mao on your side? His neglect is responsible for like 50 million of his own peoples' deaths... Thats not someone I would want on my team.

i actually hadnt even thought of putting the best scientists together. Kinda like the idea, but i doubt it'll happen. "If the mission to Mars is successful" thats my point if. What does going to mars get you at all? a few rocks to look at? woo yayz! i love rocks! -.- its not like they're even big rocks -.-

but the point is, that there is no point. We're wasting millions of dollars going to the moon when we need to make earth a little better first :)

but the point is, that there is no point. We're wasting millions of dollars going to the moon when we need to make earth a little better first :)They're going to try and place a building on Mars and will try to plant little seeded plants to try and get it to evolve into that community. The robot will water them for at least 1 month (then it will run out of water), submit a transmission back to NASA's scientists.

After 10 years, they'll go back and see how it's going.

P.S: Did i mention their next mission in space is to Titan.
