then you can buy a very nice one
if you got a friend that is in computers than you can ask him to buy the part seperate + legal copy of windows and then most of the time you save much money(with illegall more)

Okay a few questions before I can give you a good personalized response, when you say you want it to play games, what kind of games are we talking about, cutting edge first person shooters or your average game with medium graphics loads, these days its more important to get a nice graphics card than a nice cpu, especially if you have a hd monitor you want to use. However, you seem to be worrying about space so you might want a nice sized hard drive, also, don't worry about school stuff, if you want to play games on the computer it can handle whatever you need for school.
Here is my recommendation for a home build computer, its really worth making your own since its simple and often a lot cheaper, plus the fact you know your computer and can upgrade it accordingly.
Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H $79.99
GPU
GeForce 8800 GT (EVGA) $200.00-249.99
CPU
Athlon 64 X2 6000+ $154.99 - $210.00
Memory
OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel $79.99
Hard Drive
WD Caviar GP 1TB Hard Drive $227.50 - $362.89
(This is where your extra money is going, if you really want a lot of memory)
You probably won't need 1TB so here is a nice 250G.
250GB SATA HDD with 16MB cache $69.99
Power Supply Unit
Any 500 W is fine just make sure it is reliable, should be less than $100, yes its a lot of power but to be honest its worth over clocking so you need this buffer.
Optical Drive
Future proofing...
LITE-ON Black 12X DVD-ROM 32X CD-ROM SATA Blu-ray DVD-ROM Drive Model DH-4O1S-11 - OEM $139.99 (Not necessary, again using up extra money)
Or just take the dvd drive from your current computer, if you have to buy a new one should be less than $30.
If you need a monitor here is a good recommendation:
Monitor
Samsung 226BW Black 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor $269.99 - $353.90
Bare minimum price (Cheapest options, no monitor, no Blu Ray Drive)
$683.97
Maximum price (All splurges including monitor, 1TB drive, Blu Ray)
$1370
As you can see it still very affordable with these splurges still, this is about average price range for all items.
Now... You will still need mouse, keyboard, operating system, case but really just use what you are already have and upgrade to vista, that should be about another $200 max.
This should all be compatible and work fine feel free to mix and match parts make sure they are compatible.
I am glad to help you pm me any other questions or post them here.

yeah i will use it to auto runescape like all the time and surf the net but i will have loads of music and a few games on it so thats why i want the memory so i will have plenty of space.... so are those parts the only parts i will need? a complete list would be very helpful....

Ok, so, if you do have someone you are good friends with that knows how to through a pc together you could get these parts, these include everything you need for a pc, case, os, keyboard, mouse, everything and still cheaper.
Disk Drive:
Pioneer 20x DVD+/-R DVD Burner Model DVR-115DBK--This does it all, sort of, it can burn dvd's and cd's and read them.-----29.99
Case:
Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-TO5-UW--49.99
Hard Drive:
Seagate 320GB 7200rpm sata 3.0Gb/s--It has space and is fast so it is good for games and keeping documents--79.99
Monitor:
Acer 19" 5ms Response widescreen lcd--179.99
Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4--89.99
Graphics card:
EVGA nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB--229.99
Power Supply:
OCZ StealthXStream 600W--99.99
Keyboard:
Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard--58.99
Mouse:
Logitech MX518--39.99
RAM-Memory:
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800MHz--65.99
Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz Dual Core Black Edition--99.99
OS:
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit--169.99
Total without shipping = 1,194.88
Now if you don't happen to know a friend who knows how to put a pc together then i'd say go with a dell, you can customize a Dell XPS 630, not quite the best gaming rig, but still pretty good, with a monitor and have a total price of 1,459. so yeah, also, you could go with HP, they are really good, maybe not the best for gaming, but, still, good, you can customize one with everything for 1,209. so i mean, dell, hp, build your own, just throughing some info out there for you

GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4--89.99
Graphics card:
EVGA nVidia GeForce 8800GTX--409.99--This isn't the best card that nvidia has, but it is the next best, plenty of memory on it, and still fast
Power Supply:
OCZ StealthXStream 600W--99.99

Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard--58.99
Mouse:
Logitech MX518--39.99
RAM-Memory:
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800MHz--131.98--this was just doubled to get you 4gb (4 x 1gb)
Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz Dual Core Black Edition--99.99
OS:
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit-189.99--This was changed because you want more memory so i'll up it to 4gb of memory if that is what you are talking about.
Subtotal is 1538.88, this is basically a 400 dollar increase with the graphics card memory or ram whichever you prefer, the hard drive, and OS, the os was upgraded to 64bit cause it can actually use 4gb of ram.

I completely agree with mcnollend on set up, it is what you are looking for ideally, but just for the sake of options, let me recommend a few add ons or substitutes.
You still might want to get a blu-ray drive since you are a big media person it seems, you might also want to consider the X2 6000+ instead of the X2 5000+ if you have the money, but its not much of a difference you won't notice it a tad with games.
Since you are also a big media fan I would recommend a fully HD monitor, here is my pick you will love it and its great value for the price, why buy a expensive graphics card meant for top of the line with HD, and not get an HD monitor?
Here is the pick:
KDS K-24MDWB Black 24" 2ms(GtoG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor with HDCP support 400 cd/m2 900:1 Built in Speakers - $339.99 at Newegg, $30 dollar rebate right now.
If you do decide to go with this, you might want to consider this.
Buying two 8800 GT and using SLI, this can actually be cheaper than a single 8800 GTX, and should have better performance at Full HD than a GTX. Although I'm not sure if the motherboard recommended by mcnollend has two slots for graphics cards... Check with him.

If you're going to run VMs then I suggest you get an Intel Quad Core CPU, and as much fast memory as you can afford. If you're building yourself, then make sure the motherboard can handle at least 4 Gb of RAM if not 8. And make sure that it can run the memory in Dual Channel, at a speed of at least 800 if not 1066.
There's an awesome deal on just such a motherboard right now at Newegg.
ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127031
$66 shipped after a $30 rebate. You really can't go wrong for that price.
If you don't feel like building one yourself, then Dell usually has good deals pop up every couple of weeks. Keep an eye on SlickDeals.net to see when the next hot deal pops up.

Tara read my mind. The Intel Quad core processors w/ 4gb of ram own. Everything else can be meh (except cooling) and your end computer will own. Its a setup I really want to get soon.
Quad core & 4gb of ram with 4 monitors... mmmmm (yes I have 4 monitors for one of my computers right now. :D)

well, that setup is screwed up, but only a little, you only need to change like one thing i think, so, hopefully someone will catch it and tell you, but i'll just tell you now, it is our motherboard, look for an intel motheboard with an LGA 775 slot, if this isn't concluded when i get back from school i'll help you out some more with the parts.

i wouldn't go with cyberpower, there are a lot of complaints with those, get an APC, the difference between 1 and 2 graphics card is basically better performance, more frames per second, faster, i would just go with the GTX myself cause it doesn't cost as much as 2 GT and still gives off great graphics, because you are still getting a 64 bit OS your ram that you chose is fine. I would go with maybe a 600watt power supply though, 700 is way more than what any computer needs.

My advise; if you are not a computer guru like you said , I wouldn't be buidling and composing a pc by myself. Just look for a pre-assambled pc.

Looks like a good setup, if it were me i'd go with a different power supply most likely, like, OCZ, or Sparkle, or FSP, something like that, but still, it looks pretty good, not the best, but still good enough for good gaming, and yeah, that is all you need, and it will all go together just fine.

uh, well, what type of wireless router are you getting, cause you'll need a wireless card, i'd say get a linksys, they are really good, d link is another option, but, i don't know what router you're getting. The setup that you have is good, you have all the parts needed for a computer, i would have gone with a different power supply but ya know, that's just me, overall the setup looks like a pretty good setup

Hiya,
There are such websites such as:
www.pcworld.com/
www.dell.com/
These have pretty good packaged deals which on the PC world website comes with a FREE 1gb of RAM.. Pretty good for only $300!
I suppose you could try looking on such places as ebay or online auction sites, but i suggest using the above :)
GoodLuck finding your ULTIMATE desktop..
