Is it supposed to carry a person or just a small boat in general? I personally have made a boat out of a kinder suprise egg, and that was pretty small... Anyway, balsa wood is good if it's for a person and styrofoam if it's just a small boat. The thing to remember is to make it as wide and as round as possible as it gives it good support and stability, and the larger the surface area it coveres, the more weight it can carry (or you can make the sides smaller). But anyway, what do you need a boat for? Planning to go accross the world in 81 days :)?

believe it or not, you can actually make a boat out of cardboard and duct tape (the water proof kind and the normal)... keep in mind that this boat won't work for more than one day, depending on how long you use it.. but it's cheap and easy to cut

what you want to do is make a kind of canoe and put some long pieces of wood over the top and tie them down with bowline nots. Then at the end of the wood tie some water tight barrels to the end with bowline nots. simple!!.
