All I know is that a proxy is some kind of thing that doesn't let other people/sites see your IP. But what exactly is it? Like how does it get rid of or change your IP? And what are some good proxies?

Thanks in advance :)

As far as i know, they don't CHANGE your IP address, but they TEMPORARILY Change it. As soon as you exit the proxy window/reboot it will change back to normal. Also, some computers can use some proxies, while others may not be able to use them.

Well see lets say your at school, AND if in internet explore your allowed to go to tools- options - connections or whatever, if you enter a proxy address it changes the way you connect so you can get to blocked sites! Also Firefox can do this too so its practically foolproof to get on blocked sites.

Proxies are simply other computers that you connect your computer to before connecting to the internet. So instead of your IP being shown, they are seeing the proxy computer's IP. That said, however, there are various levels of security on a proxy, transparent, invisible (not sure if that's the right term), and elite (again, not sure if that's the right term). Transparent proxies are essentially worthless if you're trying to hide. They let everyone know you're using a proxy, and it will disclose your real IP if asked. Invisible proxies reveal that you are using a proxy, but don't tell people what your real IP is. Elite proxies are the best (though usually the slowest) since they don't even reveal that you are using a proxy.

I don't know of any good ones, but you should keep in mind the levels of proxies when you're looking for ones to use. Hope I helped.

a proxy generally uses another computer to access the internet for you

example
you are bob, instead of asking fred how tall he is you ask wilma to ask fred for you. thats a proxy. regular internet would be like asking fred yourself.

It is not Gurrenteed to work in school for instance my school scans words on the page. Like porn, proxies and stuff. What you have to do is go to www.samair.ru/proxy/ and write down a proxy and port before you go to school. When you get to school go to Internet Explore then tools-options-Connections-Lan - Enter Proxy stuff and you got every site unlocked all you got to do is type in the website name and your there.

Actually, if your school does anything like my school, that won't work. They force everyone to route through the school server, which is where all the blocking software is.

However, you can go to ibypass.org (or .com, .net, .name, .biz, etc. you get the picture) and use that or one of its mirrors. The reason I didn't mention it before is because it isn't all that good. It usually works, but it is insanely slow. Just make sure to copy down several of the addresses when you're on an unblocked computer, since usually at least a few of the mirrors are blocked.

hey if noone's given a awnser on what they, them selves are, not what they really do, it's that their a webserver that takes queries of what site you want a file from, then downloads the file, then sends it to you, thus said sites never see your ip, just the proxy servers ip(s), though alot of large-ish files get broken up and can't work, I.E. video, rs, ect ect.

Using a proxy is like/the same as using your internet to connect to another computer then to the website you wanted.
If you would like to go to a certain website that's blocked without proxies you could first get the IP of the address, then convert each set of numbers to bindary and string them, then convert that large number to decimal and you have a unfilterable address.

Example:
http://1076185035/
Just keep on changeing the IP address to this when clicking on a link.
Or make a iframe with that address in the runescape server.

I'm not really looking for a way that I'll get past the school filters and stuff. I'm more just looking for ways to protect my identity when I'm doing....Well not so legal stuff. I put that in my Firefox browser (excluded SRL-forums), and that's it?

And ibypass.org is giving me errors when loading page? (also tried .net and .com)

Depends what your restrictions are. e.g. at my school they have rather high web page blocking stuff but we have laptops that we can take home meaning i have firefox at school. So you can just got to firefox's settings and change the proxy ur using from the school one to ur one. Whereas if you're using a school comp then you may not have access to the proxy settings in which case you'd have to use a website based one.

You know how hard it is to block https technology? HTTPS uses secure SSL encryption and is much harder to block.

Couldn't have said it better myself :)

As for being extremely anonymous, you may want to look into a program called tor, instead of connecting to just one pc then the server you wish to connect to, it will jump to 5 or 6 proxy servers before getting to your target... It's practically untraceable (note the word practically :P).

http://www.torproject.org/

If using firefox to browse you may want to check out an extension called privoxy as well, which can let you easily switch between tor and your usual connection

@ kingarabian

The thing you said - Does it only work for the stuff listed? Or does it work for almost anything you type into the adress thing (such as www.pandora.com, which is mainly what I want it for :p). Same if you're downloading something off of a file sharing site, would it hide you?

@ 1337

It sounded good at first, but when I read the 'warnings' it seemed like too much to do :p

Yea it works for downloading i believe. It works for all sites, its just that most proxies, dont enable java, and youtube, myspace, and downloading doesnt work with them.

What would it (the one you posted) be?

I just checked it. As far as I can tell, it falls under elite. No place I checked detected the proxy.

If you're doing illegal things, people can just contact the proxy server and ask for youre information

It's nothing worse than dling music. + if it's an elite proxy, they don't even know I'm using one. And I doubt they would go through the trouble when theres millions of people who don't use proxies.

And I did google it, most of it is all confusing, I'll try again now that I know a bit more.

EDIT: And the gtfomy.biz and other links from it don't work with pandora (it doesn't load up the radio). Right now I'm using a server fromt he samur.ru (whatever zasz posted) thing. Anybody know what kind that is (elite, transparent etc)?

@runescapian

If your torrenting, limewireing, dont worry. If your downloading illegal stuff dont worry. Wana know why? Because there is a million's of people doing the same thing. There not gonna focus on you. They mainly focus on people who do it heavily. The people that download illegally and then re-produce/sell, to make cash.

Want so more proxies?

Here:

https://gtfomy.biz

https://disturb.in
https://plzhidemy.info
https://gtfo.in
https://vvd1.net

And if your not sure if they filiter your ip, type in "www.whatsmyip.org" in those proxies. If its different then yours, its safe. If not then try another one.

Good luck!

Edit: Your tryna use the radio on pandora? Or you tryna download?

Edit2: Your right they dont work, here this one works: https://vtunnel.com

if your looking for a way that people can't see what your doing on the internet, use a proxy.

if your looking for a way that people can't see who you are from the internet, use an iphider.

I went through a list of 1000 proxies during a day at school.

All blocked via Websense. My school runs all internet sites through its File Server, where it blocks out anything that contains basically everything. Theres a few games you can get on, and if you turn Altavista safesearch off you get some porno, but not much use trying any proxies on websense.

you guys have all been talking about ways that you could try and get through the block on the schools servers... what if tried to connect to your own server... like you use a bluetooth usb device to connect to your phone and used your phone as modem? i can't try cause i don't have the internet on my phone...

yes proxies are more of a blanket that will cover you while you are using it.
some of my favorite proxies are php proxies where you dont have to change the port you connect to the internet, instead the site searches through its server. for good php proxies go to proxy.org
