First off the '>' doesn't mean greater than, it's an arrow symbolizing how I'm considering a transfer from XP to Linux
I know these are noob questions, but bear with me;
Ubuntu or Fedora?
Does scar run on Linux?
Is Linux faster than XP?
The computer is a Celeron 1.7, 1gb of ram, ~80 gb HDD (if anybody is curious). All I want to do on that computer is have something I can auto on 24/7 (without using SMART) and maybe run a VM. I'm concerned about running a VM because as most people know Celerons (no matter how fast it sounds) don't make for good computers. Also can anybody tell me whether a I can run a VM on a Celeron or if VMWare is compatible with Ubuntu as MS Virtual PC obviously won't be?
I'm also considering Windows 98, can anybody tell me the amount of resources it consumes compared to XP and if there are any VM programs compatible with it.

Gentoo (sp?).
You can change... everything (insert repeating echo here).
But if you are a Windows Noob, stick with Ubuntu... and check out http://www.beryl-project.org/.

Nah, compiz fusion ftw.
Anyways, why do you refuse to run SMART? Also, scar will be slower on Ubuntu because it has to run through wine.

Ubuntu is more n00b proof

Yes, for normal runescape/scar you'll need to change some Wine settings, but SCAR, SMART and Wine just works fine together :)
Is Linux faster than XP?
Depends, but usually it's a little bit faster.

Feel confident to mess with the Wine config file? If so you can, else I recommend SMART.

There's a Linux VMWare version, Haven't used it in a while but it works. I still recommend SMART though.

Most programs support it as guest, and a few as a host. Uses little bit less resources but not that much that you can notice.

Linux is great... However I would recommend TinyXP as your main operating system to help speed it up. I've used TinyXP on a laptop and a friends computer and the speed difference is noticeable. Even on your new system try TinyXP.

Make sure you get your drivers written down or downloaded before you install TinyXP.
