btw the computer is custom built, i have 2gb of ram and some pretty good specs.

I know youre problem!!!!
you have vista :p
lol, sorry, I'm just not a vista fan...Maybe you could restore your comp?
That usually works for me, but make you use your restore disks that come with it, or the ones you can burn...I think that might help if you wanna take it to that extreme, but you gotta save all your stuff, hope ya got an external HDD :p

wait...you don't have vista?
or you don't wanna re-install it?
or you don't have an external HDD?
There are too many possible "you don'ts" to just say that you don't, please elaborate.
Thanks :)

Maybe you did something wrong when you built it? I have vista and it only froze once for me (when I had like 30 programs running lol). And my specs aren't too good - 1GB RAM, 3.0 GHZ Proccesor...
EDIT: If you wna save all your stuff, use Peazip (Search on these forums to find out more) ;)

Actually he's right, XP is currently the best Windows out there (although Vista could be debated as being a Mac 10.-6).
It's not really that hard to find on the internets (http://thepiratebay.org/).
Otherwise, you could try turning off random anti-explosion measures such as UAC, Vista Sidebar, maybe even that stupid Aero thing.

Try doing a system file check. To do that open up the start menu, type cmd into the search box and run it as an administrator. Once you have it up type in "SFC /scannow" without quotes and let it run. If that doesn't work check to make sure your drivers are up to date and tat you arnt running an old or incompatible program. Vista is really quite a bit better than XP after you get over the whole compatibility thing which is getting resolved, especially since SP1.

I have vista as well, and here are some tips that may help your experience:
1. Turn off certain features that you don't need, such as the Sidebar, Areo, and if you go to Task Manager and close any unneeded programs that will help as well.
2. Run virus and Spyware scans regularly, my advice would be using Zone Alarm, Avast No Adware and Spyware Terminator.
3. Don't forget to do Disk Cleanups and De-fraggings once a month at bare minimum (I havn't done one for like 9 months, so i should do that >>)
4. DON'T GO TO PORN SITES. There i said it.
5. Stay with sites you know and trust, don't download any files you arent sure of.
6. Update regularly to allow Vista to obtain more security protocol's.
7. Finally, Back up your system OFTEN, and get a CD or a Flash Drive for an External Restore point. A Flash Drive is more recommended then a CD in my opinion.
My vista has never frozen up, and I am running Vista Home, on a 3.0GHz processor, 2 gigs of DDR2 ram and an integrated ATI Radion 200 Express graphics card.
If you need any more help, i will be glad to assist in whatever way i can.

Try going to Control Panel-> System -> Advanced System Settings-> Click on advance tab-> Performance Settings-> Adjust for best performance-> Apply and click ok.
If this help its probably using to much of your computers resources. Even though is has ok specs over time your gather alot of junk over time.
Have an older computer with Windows Xp?
The little sticker on the back with the Cd key will save you a hundred bucks.
If you do end up formating and installing Vista again you can Norton Ghost to create an image file of your HDD. Because there is always little things you will miss from your old HDD files.
Good luck
