View Full Version : Give the appearance that your computer is off?

Is it possible? Supposedly, my parents will be coming in every night to make sure the computer is off. If it isn't off by 10, they'll put restrictions on the internet from 8 or something like that. But, I really want to auto at night. I was thinking of turning it off, waking up at like 1 or 2, setting it up, then letting it run, but, my parents wake up way earlier than me, and they might check the computer.
What might make it hard is that my computer usually makes some noise while autoing (not that much, but noticeable if you're listening for it), so opening my computer and disabling the lights won't help much. I have Vista. I've tried putting it in stand-by, but that doesn't work (all applications stop running).
So, can you think of any ways that I could give the appearance that it's turned off? My parents probably won't check it extensively, they'll probably just pop in to see if they can hear noise or see lights. I was thinking maybe a program that puts your computer into semi-sleep-mode, if there's anything like that (like, the apps keep running but it looks like sleep mode). Or maybe something that I could set like "Turn on at 12 AM, coord click the Scar play button, Turn off at 4:30 AM". That's doubtful though...
Thanks in advance :)

Go on msn Runescapian :). You can just use a script that will turn it off at 6AM or whatever time they get up at. But you have to start the script a few minutes after they wake up at 10.
there might be a program that turns it on
if i hibernate or standby my antivirus will turn my comp on scan it then turn it off

i thought that you could log off and smart would keep running? then youd just have to turn of num lock and cover up the button.
at first i told my mom that it would use up less electricity when it was left on(saying that turning it one would use up a lot of electricity :p), but then she got suspicious. doesnt really matter now, cuz she accepts the fact that the computer will be left on :p

Well, Da 0wner made me a script that turns it off, and Timer volunteered to make me one if his doesn't work. So, as of right now, I have the shutting down part, but do you think there's any program that could bring a computer out of sleep mode/power off mode at a given time?

I have a batch file ready for scapian, just turn on the computer, the batch file will run on start-up, opening and hiding scar, then shut off the computer at a given time... :D

mhm i like the idea of a batch file, then running scar etc.
But that still involves manual labour, if you know what i mean :\
Mhmm it might be impossible to rnadomly start a computer from sleep, hibernate...
unless you do what i do,
i manually put it on sleep and it awakes when i type with my mouse / keyboard lol
SO i kinda bring my mouse upstairs, which is wiresless thna few hours later 'shakes mouse' then away it goes! :O

Sorry for being a little off topic, but you should just buy a new heat sink if your computer has that much trouble cooling it. If you are over clocked I would suggest toning it down a little, to reduce the heat as well.
kinda back on topic, if your computer can be heard easily just set some sort of noise maker (like a fan, air purifier) next to the tower to drown out the noise of it running, since summer is approaching, and I'm assuming it's getting hotter there...(it's not here, it snowed a lot yesterday...)

i have vista also, just go into power settings and set your power settings to energy saver, which lowers the systems performance, this way it doesnt work so hard, doesnt get so hot, the fan doesnt activate so much.
Then, run whatever script you are runing with SMART and then lock your computer and turn off/unplug your moniter.
Better to unplug , that way if they try to "turn it on" the creen will remain blank.

Suggestion: Get quiet fans.
And look in your BIOS for Wake on RTC :)

yea putting a fan near your computer would work great, simply disable the light on the front and the fan will cover up the sound? =)
also to the guy above me with nubby fletching, using a mouse recorder with unfinished bolts is an easy way to get to 99 =p i was getting 500k-700k exp an hour with addy bolts and a sped up mouse recorder. took 20m exp before they caught me =o that was running it all night at games arena where it was sped up to a point where it lagged the server lol. id turn off bot and it kept fletching for a good 10 minutes. you can also do this on a low cmb account pickpocketing but the ncp resets after about 10 minutes if you dont move and you might die from lagging and still pickpocketing continuously

Just because it is brand new does not mean it is good ;)
and I live in Montana, it isn't notorious for being hot, but it often gets well above 100 here, and my computer doesn't heat up to much :p

Or srround it with layers of lead plating and egg cartons until evena nuclear strike cannot get through it o.O.
I also have the sma eproblem. But, since the main router is controlled at my parents bedroom, and they switch it off every night, I cannot really do much. They have very, vewwy sensitive ears.

i would also go for the silent fan option...it is the best option
if u soundproof it, it will just get hotter , and if u take out the fan completely, it will also get hotter.
or, i have attatched a switch to my case fan (the loud one) so that it can be turned off at night when the surrounding temprature has dropped and the computer can run almost silently
have you checked for a case fan, or is it just a very loud cpu fan ?

It's just cause my computer isn't all that great, has Vista, and therefore autoing stresses it and the fan needs to work alot to keep it cool.
Anyway, my parents don't care now, so I don't need help with this anymore :p

Or download Smart Shutdown from Slawdog (or something) and run 3 apps at once.
Program 1: Stand-by, 9.30 PM
Program 2: Wake up, 0.00
Program 3: Shutdown, 7.00 AM
or something
