View Full Version : Desktop or laptop?

Point of macroing, is to leave the macro overnight, right? If you have a desktop, I heard that it actually might cost $2 24h in electricity. In laptop, the cost is more than 10 times less. I'm thinking about buying a new computer, and desktops are much cheaper with same performance than laptops. Do you guys have any excuses or good explanations or other facts, that might say, that desktops doens't use that much energy or sumething.

I have a really POWERFULL desktop computer!
But...I don't like desktop. I want to buy a laptop, let me see if i get one in my birthday next month:)

If you are going to use it for other things then macroing, like playing other games etc, i really suggest getting a desktop.
I payed €480 for my pc with the following specs:
3.1 Ghz AMD X2 Dual core
4 GB DDR-2 Ram @ 1066 MHZ
Geforce 9600 GT 512 MB
So in that case I would suggest a desktop.
If you are just going to use it for macroing and maybe some school or w/e and you want portability, i'd go with a laptop.
Just remember that laptop batteries only last about 4-5 hours. So if u're going to macro overnight it would still mean the laptop is on the plug all night long.

I have both a laptop and a desktop. The desktop gives off more heat so I don't keep it on that often. My laptop is constantly on and I use it daily. My desktop I use maybe 1 time a week, if that. I use my desktop screen to dual screen with my laptop (that is how unoften I use it).
So I would say get a good laptop and that is the road I would take. Desktops you have to be cooped up in 1 room while a laptop you can take where you want with you.

Desktop is the way to go. How old are you anyway? Are you the one paying the electric bill? ;)
Also, while autoing you can turn of your monitor or monitors, that would save electricity. I don't think scar will still run when your computer goes down into "power-save" mode though...

Im 15, still living on my perents house:p The computer doen't go to the power saver mode because the scar is clicking the screen. Ofcourse I'm having lap plugged in, still it uses more than 10 times less energy. My father is not just gonna be happy with desktop running overnite. Maybe I should wish laptop 4 christmas.

If your thinking of getting a laptop to save money, wouldnt it be cheaper to just stick with a desktop and pay the bill rather than get a laptop?

You can actually get laptop with +3gb memory +160gb hard drive, dual core, and other usefull crap under $450. I think I'm just gonna get laptop, cause I can use it overnite and its gonna pay itself back in few years compared to desktop.

Imo, i'd say desktop, laptops are harder to use and computers only take power if the monitors on turn it off and it'll cost tons less, besides if you notice a price change just macro like once every 2 nights? or something work a plan out, i hate laptops to hard to use, but very easy to get around with them

it is true that desktops do use that much energy but have you considered what laptops use
If you plan on leaving it on overnight chances are your gonna have to leave the charger in and that does use up quite a bit of energy as long as computer is below 95% battery, however its probably cheaper
Performance wise you want a desktop
Cost wise you want a laptop or if you can find one a cheap but good desktop

I've been looking into laptops recently (already have a desktop), and I've come to the conclusion that laptops == expensive >_<
If you're on a budget, definitely get a desktop. If you have $1000 to spend, get a laptop. I don't think you should worry about how much power they use up overnight: somewhere I read that, on average, leaving a computer on overnight is a couple cents per hour.

Desktop=500w, laptop maybe 30w-50w. Desktops are cheaper but they so much energy, that if im gonna buy a laptop, its gonna pay itself back, and I dont need to spend $1k, it can be 500 bucks. Laptops are not really that expenisve that u think if you buy used one.

Um, it would take a really long time for a laptop to make up the difference in price between it and a desktop with equal specs.
Oh, and another reason to get a desktop. If you ever want to upgrade it in the future, you can easily. Good luck doing that with a laptop, unless it's just RAM.

The vast majority of laptops are not easy to upgrade. A lot of them also can't be upgraded. Yours is the exception, not the rule.

You call, a notebook cooler, some stickers, and a paint job customization?!
I guess it is, but NOT the type bullz was talking about. Also, the alienware swapping video cards....first you have to have an alienware, which are way to over-priced. I would like to see you take the "portable" tower to the bathroom, or to the mall, or to class with you....that's just a stupid thing to have pointed out. And the "less electricity thing?! Are you serious...? That is just a silly thing to add in there, no reason, whatsoever....wow dude, just wow

Easy Laptop Cooling:
< http://www.xoxide.com/enermax-aeolus-alum-nbcooler-250mmfan-black.html >Still not as good cooling as a desktop, but those things do help a lot.
Laptops can swap parts:
- Alienware graphics cards are swappable
- Ram is easy to upgrade
- Hard drives are just as easyNormally the graphics card is integrated. Yes, you can upgrade RAM, but not usually to how much a desktop can handle. Hard drives are easy to swap, yes. Can you do things such has run multiple in RAID though? I have never looked that up...
Laptops can be customized:
I think you misunderstood what I meant by "customizable". I meant parts-wise, not looks-wise.

Pretty cool, but has nothing to do with this.
EDIT: @Brain, yeah, Alienware is horribly overpriced. I was looking at one at BestBuy, and it was equal to mine, maybe even a little worse, and it was more than twice the price. You pay for the Alienware logo.

Sorry.... but I was just trying to have fun... I was being extremely sarcastic and trying to get some laughs.... Yes desktops can do way better for the money put into them... If you personally barebonesded a laptop it would be close to the same price of a desktop of same compatibility and efficiency.... For the most part.... if you look good enough laptops are not really customable... just the insides (for certain companies only) and the outside color.... Really the only thing that can be changed in a laptop is the ram (rarely over 6-8) and the hard drive.... Actually I have never come across a laptop that does not allow for some upgrade to the system = not exception.... = a rule.... the evertek website was just a link to show that you can buy indavidual parts.....Alienware laptops are way overpriced; the only way to get a cheap one is to buy a stolen one off ebay and crack the admin password off.....for electricity, yes that was valid; it was suggesting gas or other source = not electricity = I win....
Sorry for anybody who got their panties all in a bunch over that.
Like I said... I think desktops are the better way to go.... unless you want mobility... the strap was just a funny gesture....
I would suggest a tower for running the server and have it on all the time with an extreme battery backup and a few terabytes of hard drive space available... and for a laptop ... best buy and ebay make some pretty good deals.....

Protip: Sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet. If you do nothing to indicate sarcasm, no one will know it's sarcastic.
If you personally barebonesded a laptop it would be close to the same price of a desktop of same compatibility and efficiency....
Good luck trying to find decently priced barebones parts for laptops. Often times, that'll become much more expensive then getting a standard one.
Actually I have never come across a laptop that does not allow for some upgrade to the system = not exception.... = a rule....
You've never looked that many prebuilt laptops, have you? The cheapest of them often allow nothing other than the RAM and maybe the HDD to be swapped out. And even higher end ones usually don't allow you to replace more than that, either. You see, most have no place to put anything else.
for electricity, yes that was valid; it was suggesting gas or other source = not electricity = I win.... I'm sorry, but you win what exactly? I wasn't aware that there was anything to "win".

Ahh... well note to self, "state sarcasm before I even talk... or at least in that post.." thanks for the tip...
Buying wholesale items (example < www.evertek.com >) will get you a decent barebones laptop (I am not saying that it is the best way to go.... or that all of the items can be found on that site). If you are going to barebones a laptop it will be because you want it to be better than what is on market .... therefore will probably cost more anyway....Is doubling or even tripling the ram on a computer not an upgrade.... it certainly would run a bit faster... and ... is "upgrading" the hard drive from a single 80gb to a single 500gb or (if able to) dual 500gb not an upgrade also?.... and "I win".... sorry... but my sad attempt to being sarcastic over the internet again...
I hope I don't offend anybody seriously... seriously.

The problem with what you posted is that site is for resellers only. Meaning most people can't buy from them.
As for the upgrading, note that I've been saying other than the RAM and HDD. I've already acknowledged the fact that those can be upgraded. But what if you want to upgrade your processor? Or graphics card?
