Need help choosing between 2 laptops, what are you opinions?

Dell studio 15, the £679 one
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

or Samsung R610
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Samsung_R610_Laptop_NP-R610-AS01UK/version.asp

Also, is the screen resolution on the samsung a little too high? That seems a huge amount for a 15/16" screen.

Thanks in advance :)

I would go with the Samsung, because it has a better and more reliable brand, uses Vista (note, don't bash Vista, because mine hasn't BSOD'd in ages) Good amount of RAM,good resolution.

The Dell has more ram, uses Vista, and a more reliable brand

Dell

Better processor
More HDD
More Ram

Little bit inferior gfx card but still good

Dell also has AMAZING warranty service. My uncle had a dell business laptop and he was on a business trip to Mexico and his hard drive failed. He called dell to see what they could do and they asked if he could replace it himself he said yes. The contacted a local outlet they had a contract with in the area and got him a new HDD in 8 hours.

Pretty impressive.

I'd always go with an HP.

My two cents...
Me and my friends all have different laptops

Mine is Hp the rest are
Toshiba
Compaq
Gateway
Dell

1. My never had problems until 1 year and a half of nonstop work, my motherboard failed. It was half year past the warranty date, still I called HP to see what could be done. I got a new motherboard. new dvd dl burner, and an upgraded graphics all for free. I swear I must have pulled the Jedi mind trick over the phone or something.

The Toshiba runs fine after 1 year ish, my only problem with it is Toshibas look kinda cheaply made.

The Compaq is pretty much a clone of my Hp. but half the price and runs so cool even while playing WOW this thing doesn't heat up like the rest.

The Gateway after the half a year you could smelled burning plastic coming from his notebook. He called gateway all they offered was a 500 dollar credit towards his next gateway computer. He paid 1400 for his.

The Dell would constanly heat and shut itself down after a year and use. He ended up selling on ebay and buying a Mac.

I know these can just be flukes considering their models and amount of use. But I would seriously consider an Hp/Compaq. Great customer support. They even have a video library for every Hp/compaq teardown on the hp website. Most companies want you to go to them for their repairs and dare not teach you a simple fix when they can charge you 80+ dollars.

You are right, you must have jedi powers. I am constantly on the phone with HP's warranty reps. I am a technician at staples and we are a HP Facilitation Center and so I am in contact with them continually. I'd say 90% of the people I get have their heads to far up their rear ends they dont know what way is up. You must have gotten some guy who was quitting that day or something :p

Not to mention HP is the third mos common brand for me to have in for repair, next to Acer and Gateway (Which are the same company just like HP and Compaq)

The Toshiba runs fine after 1 year ish, my only problem with it is Toshibas look kinda cheaply made.

I very rarely have toshiba's in with problems, when I do they are usually viruses or stupid software problems caused by the user. Very rarely hardware.

Their economy laptops sure have a bland case but some are pretty fancy (http://www.directdial.com/dd2/img/item/300x300W/P/PSAG8C%252D02W013.jpg)

The Compaq is pretty much a clone of my Hp. but half the price and runs so cool even while playing WOW this thing doesn't heat up like the rest.

Thats because it is HP...

They run cooler because they aren't stuffed full with as much preloaded crap services as official HP ones are and they tend to have lower clocked parts thus causing less heat.

The Gateway after the half a year you could smelled burning plastic coming from his notebook. He called gateway all they offered was a 500 dollar credit towards his next gateway computer. He paid 1400 for his.

Of course you can, its made by Acer! Its almost as bad a eMachines! Acer and eMachines are the most returned computers in the industry!! They are throw away computers! Sure they have seemingly good specs, but the quality of the parts is almost nil!

[/End technicians rant] :p

will the dell play BlueRay films well? I dont really want to spend an extra £100 on blue ray if its only going to be good when using the HDMI slot. And also, is it worth spending £30 more on the dell for a 1440X990 resolution screen?

Just because the warranty in your area isn't "nice" for you, doesn't mean you should shun the entire company.

I've had like 8 Dell computers and never even needed to use a warranty, let alone call the company.

If you have to call the company, you did something stupid. Unless of course they send a banana instead of a computer.
