In this tutorial I will be teaching you how to do the desktop prank :)

1. First, find the button on your keyboard that says something along the lines of PRTSC or Print Screen and press it with all open windows closed and the screen showing your desktop.

2. Open Microsoft Paint.

3. Press CTRL and V at the same time to paste your picture onto paint. You should now see a picture of your desktop on paint.

4. Save the picture in any folder.

5. Right click anywhere on your desktop and move your mouse down to "Properties". (In Windows Vista hit the "Personalize" button.)

6. At the top of the window that pops up there should be tabs. Click on the "Desktop" Tab. (This would be the Desktop Background option in Windows Vista)

7. Click "Browse" and find the image of the desktop that you saved. Then double click on it and click on OK.

8. The first item in the Right Click Menu should be "Arrange Icons By" (In Windows Vista it should say "view" )

9. Roll your mouse over it and move your mouse down over the words "Show Desktop Icons". Click on it to uncheck it.

10. After a few moments, all of the icons on your desktop should be gone.

11. Now if you try to click on a desktop icon, it will not work.

Have fun using this on your friends and I hope you all liked it :D

Nice post... I've been pulling that prank since my freshman year... what is also fun is to make invisible folders and put random stuff in it... like [gov. eyes only] or [top secret] ... the like..so when they are clicking around ... they get random files and folders opening with [gov property] in it...=lol... freak them out.

This can be done in about 20 seconds if you're good. It's fun when your teacher or friend walks out of the room for a minute ;)

This is easily done and I think with Fn+Print Screen or Alt+PrintScreen you don't have to go into paint and do the file, I think it saves automatically in Images... Way easier :p.

So that way :

Fn + Print Screen (Takes 2 seconds approx.).
Setting that picture as back ground (Takes 5-10 seconds approx.)
Taking away the icons (Takes 2 seconds approx.)

In total :

9-14 seconds approx to do the prank which can cause to up to a month's wonder.

Did this in the library in my school. Said there was a problem, that I couldn't click anything.

They didn't understand anything and now they took it into repairing xD.

The Fn+PrintScreen must be with a third-party program, does not do that on WinXP.

Tried alt ? :S

Yup. Windows XP does not automatically save screenshots. All using Alt tells Windows to do is capture only what currently has focus, instead of the entire screen. You still have to paste it.

Make one like [-jesus-] made, will convert the screenshot to .png, upload to imageshack.us automatically, then will give you a direct image url once it is done (and will automatically copy it to the clipboard).

Hmm, just a little side note for people who decided to do this in their school.

You can delete the file of the screenshot WHILE its set on the desktop.

I noticed that when I tried to find a way to hide it since when you use the computers in my school, you have to sign a paper which says where/when you use the computer.

So if there's an error like this, they'd try to find the file with the screenshot, find when it was made and then set me in detention.

just sign a persons name who you don't like. at my school we have novell login, so i just log on under the default user and and then log into mine on a computer in the other room, so i can be 'me have no cluez what you be doing, i was in here doing my historyz.'
