Are there any handheld devices such as smartphones that can run Runescape either out of the box or by downloading a java implementation?

No mobile devices can play such a complex Java program. Also, if he was not just spamming, he could have Googled it before-hand.
And I hate when my panties get in a bunch :(

Ummm i think the iPhone can
My blackberry probably can because it plays java stuff perfectly fine. Now whether or not it'd be worth it is a different question

No they can not.
1) The game requires way too much CPU to support hand-held devices.
2) The resolution of the screen vs the size of the client window is too much.
You are free to try it I guess, but I am 99.99% sure it will not work :)

You know you're addicted to Runescape when... (http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39950) you try and play it on a handheld device.
Sorry had to be said, and this has been brought up many times.
Think I can play it on my phone?

Actually I did google it, and as far as I could tell, there are a few options for running java on various devices, so it seems plausible.
If you think I'm spamming, then tell me, what should I be posting instead? I thought reading posts and writing responses to them was what you did in a forum, but maybe I'm just crazy.

You are bad tempered uninformed and if you continue down your path of unenlightenment you will never achieve much.
I don't know what, if any, mobile devices can currenty properly play runescape. What I do know though is that after a bit of tinkering I managed to get the runescape client running on my old N95. Now the game wasn't playable, down to controls and being too jerky, but it did work!!!
No if I could get it going on an old N95 I'm sure it's more than possible that there are many newer devices out there with better interfaces that could possible even run it and be playable.
NEVER say NEVER!!

To run runescape on the iPhone you need to have Java app on it. To my knowledge iPhone dose not have java installed on it. You can jailbreak it and run windows on you iPhone then you should be able to play runescape :)
So to answer your question, "Yes you can play runescape on a mobil device :)"

Being "able to play" = actually being able to control it, etc. A mobile device can not do that.

I was going to post about that kind of thing, but I'm not sure if it counts. That's not you running Runescape on a mobile device, it's you connecting to a computer that's running Runescape. It's just using the mobile device as a glorified remote control.
get a intec screen for ps3 done...

All that is, is just the PC doing all the work. The iPhone is not doing any real "RS" except for controlling where the mouse is.
And lol, IE.

Make up your mind..
I demonstrate that runescape can be run on a mobile device (and quite an old one at that) and you say fine but a mobile device can't controll it..
Being "able to play" = actually being able to control it, etc. A mobile device can not do that.
Then someone demostrates it being run on a PC and streamed to a mobile device and you say all the mobile device is doing is controlling it. (which according to you it can't!)
All that is, is just the PC doing all the work. The iPhone is not doing any real "RS" except for controlling where the mouse is.
And lol, IE.
Just stop being stuborn, admit you are wrong and appologize to the original poster before you dig yourself into a deeper darker hole and make yourself look more stupid.

If you cant play runescape on an n97 then you cant play it on any "stock" phone. The n97 has java, an unbelievable cpu, and an unbelievable resolution that can support 720p +. From my previous job at a cell phone store, i have went through pretty much every phone imaginable, from the crappy boost mobile phones all the way to the $80k + vertu phones. I believe its safe to say, n97 or none.
