apt-cache search [insearch app name here]

it will retrun all results related to the word you searched.

So example

apt-cache search nVidia

you will get a whole bunch of different drivers and stuff

You can also use the GUI to search for packages.
System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager.
A program in installed with

(sudo) apt-get install <name>

And search is done with:

aptitude search <name>

Actually, it is not the answer to his question. He asked how to search using apt-get.

I thought that there was a gui search in Synaptic? I think I've used it.

In that case.. I'm a doofas. But, just to put it out there. The search with the GUI does work pretty well.

i will use synaptic to search and use apt-get to install :)
but if i get too bored of using apt-get all the time then i will just use synaptic all the time to search, install and uninstall
