My computer recently has been acting irratically, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong. So I'm asking you guy for help, and if I still can't get it to work then I'll reinstall vista (:S)

Here's what's wrong:

Programs would stop responding at random intervals, making me perform a hard shutdown.

"My documents" takes FOREVER to load (2-5 minutes); and if I try clicking a document before it completely loads it stops responding.

My documents isn't the only thing that's slow; when I right click on my connections icon and click "connect to a network", it takes a very long time to load the connections box.

I tried disabling startup programs and the problem persists.

I really hope I don't have to reinstall windows :( Any ideas?

reinstallin would prbbly be best...do u have any antivirus software? id recommend avg free or pro.

note: i personally dont have any virus protection. its not nessessary if you know what your doing. first of all u need a good firewall, windows firewall isnt it. i use kerio sunbelt firewall from 2007. it lets me control EVERYTHING. even program execution and injection.

so nyway, you can try to using restore points or use antivirus software. i would really recommend reinstalling windows.

use a resotr point

kinda off topic but it is possible for a virus to make a resotre point wiht the virus in it and can a virus connect to other commputer via wireless motom

im not making a virus m just curious

J_Pizzle, a virus can do anything im pretty sure. it all depends on what you program it to do and how good of a scripter you are :P

and ive never experianced a virus transfering itself wirelessly, but i usto have a few computers hooked up in my house all on LAN together, and if one got a virus... they all would >.< it was annoying having to clean one out, just realizing that it moved onto another computer and hide there

Try scanning your computer with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) its maybe one of the best antivirus programs and the scan is free, just wait to scan your PC

Defragging may also help. NTFS gets dirty fast.

This is pretty old school, but will give a pretty good idea if you have a virus: Run HijackThis and post a log here.

It does end up that way a good portion of the time, but 10 mins of diagnostics before jumping to last resort couldn't hurt.

thats true, he might as well find out what he did. did you download anything recently Metal? warez or maybe exes or rars? something illegal?

if your ever unsure of a file you download [like if its not from microsoft or apple or some other trusted company] i would recommend using jottie scan on it. it's a free online scan for 1 file (since most things come zipped these days). jottie can be found here:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/en

and as you can see you can adjust the language accordingly by changing last 2 letters to whatever..

Okay, funny story, I went through the exact same thing 4 days ago. EXACT same. I have a laptop, and I too am using vista. Here's what went down for me:

Clicking on "My computer"/"My documents" would take forever to load, it took me 3 min to open up firefox; playing doom was ever so choppy.

So I then proceeded to run every possible clean up program. I had spy bot going, Avg, Hijack this, and even a defragment on my computer. (I only had 42 gb free of disk pace out of 225gb. I deleted norton, because it just sat there and did nothing took up valuable space + ram, and it never detected a single virus. AVG detected 9.

So after a long clean up, and deleting junk I did not need/ use, and stuff I never knew I had to begin with, my computer still ran a tad choppy. I was baffled. I soon realized another factor I was forgetting. My laptop was very hot, and I keep it in my room which has almost no air flow. So that was another problem. After a trip to my local wal-mart I got a cooling fan for my laptop and now it runs like it was bran new.

In a summary for you. Try the following before re installing vista:

- delete files & folders on your computer you do not use anymore.
- defrag, virus scan and spybot scan your entire computer for anything that could be sucking up bandwidth and running applications on your computer that could/ will slow down your computer
- check and see how hot your computer gets; this is also a factor when processing applications. If it is: look into 3rd party cooling devices.

If all of that fails, then formatting/ re-set dates, would be your best option.

Hope that helps :)
