View Full Version : How do you make your external to a FTP?
I need to make my external into a FTP server.
External : TARGA DataBox II - 250GB
I talked to my brother and he said youd have to have the pc on alot, open ports and whatnot and I would like to know if theres any way I can protect myself from hackers if the port is open?

Hmm, tell us the gate and the ip etc. then we will help you to prevent hackers xD.
I know how to share a drive in a network doing currently.
I wouldn't advice to do this.
(has this something to do with "our not more 'our'" project?)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320030R costs money, but doesn't require PC to be on. If you want to access it from outside (school/work/etc) you need to also forward port 21 from your modem to this router.
Or, Filezilla FTP server, which is free, but requires PC to be on. You need to go to portforward.com and follow the guide for your router for Filezilla to be able to access it from within your network. If you want to access it from outside (school/work/etc) you need to also forward port 21 from your modem to your PC (EDIT: I mean router. Modem to router and router to PC). Also allow on your software firewall.

You need a good internet provider.
But you will get copyright issues in no time.

also if your going to stream it from your external then make sure you have a static ip
otherwise if its dynamic then everytime it changes you will have to update it
unless you make it read a text file from another server and then get it to connect from the ip in that text file and everytime the ip changes you update the text file

You pay for 100 mb(its) and you get 15 mb(yte) no wonder. 8 bits is one byte.
You get 15 mb download.
Those ISP's are rip offs.

Actually not, for an extra 10$ per month I can get upto 60 down and 40 up, I've had this before but my current budget is not allowing it.

You missed the point of that router lol. You plug the external hard driver directly into that router because it has USB ports, so the external doesn't go through your computer at all. The same thing can be accomplished for a little bit more with an Apple AirPort Express.

Yea, you don't need to have the PC on, or forward the ports from router to PC, but you still need to forward from modem to router. It's a pretty good router btw, the only one I have been happy with stock firmware (DD-WRT on my others). There's only so much you can do at home with video streaming, at some point a VPS or dedicated server is needed.

I'm thinking of raising money for a good server, all this wont be needed but it sure as hell is good to know these things, thx alot ;)

Yeah, the router was pretty nice :(. Somehow they don't ship to the Netherlands.
So I will have to find it here :).
Highly possible too.
