I only have 13 gigs of my 80 gig hard drive left and Im wanting to get a new hard drive.

Should I get a external or internal hard drive? External hard drives give you more gigs for your money but can I use it as my default operating system (yes my comp can boot from usb)? Would it be any different from an internal hard drive?

USB2 is slow for a hard drive. Only consider external if you need data on the move.

Besides the fact that one is internal and one is external. Not knowing anything about hdds but i don't think its anything different.

external will be slower since it goes through USB, unless you get an eSATA one. Also, internal HDD's are cheaper per gig....not the other way around, but you can take an external to your friend's house.

I have 320 internal and a 750 external, the 750 is enclosed in a media drive enclosure, so I can hook it right up to a TV.

EDIT: I guess it might be cheaper to buy an external if you have a laptop...you didn't specify. If you have a laptop, I'd get an external, if you have a desktop, depends on what you want.

I have a desktop btw.

Im thinking of getting this hard drive:

That a good hard drive?

that's expensive for a 500gb, Have you checked newegg? That's where I buy all my computer stuff from.

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=14&name=Internal-Hard-Drives

I wouldn't buy the super cheapest of the capacity you want, but I've had my 320 (2nd cheapest 320 when I bought mine) for 2.5 years now...and it's been powered up for almost 500 days over that 2.5 year period

Are you picking it up or are you ordering it off the internet? Im guessing picking it up since you linked to a futureshop webpage. My advice would be to you if you do not wish to wait for delivery would be to look for local shops that sell computer parts. 100$ for 500 GB is horrible even for Canadians and its an outrage that they can even sell that for that much.

http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=31000&vpn=WD1001FALS&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD&promoid=1021

There are plenty of 1TB hard drives on the internet that you can buy for 100$. No offense but if you pay that much for that hard drive you are either a) impatient b) do not have the resources to order online (credit card).

Edit: Brain, he linked to a Canadian site. The american version of newegg won't help him and the Canadian newegg has some iffy prices. Besides, ncix does price matching if he does find a cheaper item on newegg if he still wishes to order from Newegg.

Well i have an external, i keep movies/music on it so its fine for just that. But if your gonna use it for draging back and forth to comp or main programs and stuff like that then external. But if you just want data and shit on it go for external.

Dont really like to buy online but, i went to newegg.ca and looked at the hard drives... wow they are a lot cheaper than future shop.

Im interested in buying this one:

Does all hard drives work with all computers? I dont want to buy a hd and have it not working with my computer.

not all HDD's will work with all computers, so far the 2 you have found have both been sata, so I assume you know that you need a sata one? If not, you could get an IDE one...but it'd be more sucky. if your computer isn't too old it should have sata ports for HDD's. and if you don't like to buy online, then you don't like to get the best deals.

I think that samsung would do great, buy that and a sata cable and should be good to go. but pop open that computer and make sure you can run sata HDD's first, and make sure you have a sata power connector open from your power supply, if not, you might want to get a molex to sata adapter.

I just looked at my hard drive and it said serial ata on it.

So if I buy this hd, I'd be fine with replacing my hard drive that I have right now? Dont need to buy any cables?

Brain

if you just want to replace the one you have then you should just need the drive, but you could probably run both at once, is there an extra sata port on your mobo and an extra sata power connection on the power cables?

Yes

well...if the yes is to running both, buy an extra sata cable, however long you think you need. Then you should be set. I don't know if many HDD's come with mounting screws....but I'd just steal one from the other HDD, since you don't really need all 4 holding it on.

some of my HDD's have came in a state where the computer won't even recognize it, and you have to format it with an xp/vista install disk, then it works fine. and others have came ready to run

Mmm it was like 200 bucks for 500 gig. But like 3 years ago or so.

maybe you got a lemon then, or you're really rough on them :p
my enclosure fan is starting to get a little loud though, but that's a quick fix whenever I get around to it.

buy and internal one and put it in an external case. It should be cheaper and give you more space.

If you have the luck I have with computers, I reccomend a External HDD, because I constantly loose my files when my computers die. xD

I picked up a 1TB one for £80 yesterday, with eSATA ;)
