View Full Version : Internet Program Request

So, I need to get a propram that would test the internet speed (bandwith) allocated (available) on the network like every hour to half hour... and then record it.

The program could be just running all the time... like set on the desktop and then esr to open and run at different intervals.

I was wondering if anyone here knew of any free and reliable programs that are out there... or if anyone knew how to make, teach, or direct me to a place to learn how to do this.

This is not a ping thing...

program: test bandwith dwn/up on set intervals and then record it for viewing at a later date.

OR it could just be a program that would somehow route through a speed testing website and record the results. Really, whatever/however it works... I was just curious if anyone here had heard of something, knew of something, or knew how to make something that would do this.

The program would also have to be able to run on/after startup and continue the process in the event that the computer were to reboot. Also, with the recordings, record the date and time of day.

Thanks for you time. Have a nice rest of your day.

Alright, I would like to thank those who helped by submitting ideas, thoughts, and the like. I would like to say that I was able to find a program to do what is needed. So, I thought I would share it, just in case it might be useful to anybody else.

This program < http://www.manageengine.com > is a very universal and useful tool. Among other things, it "is a comprehensive application used to monitor heterogeneous business applications such as Web applications, application servers, Web servers, databases, network services, systems, etc. It provides remote business management to the applications or resources in the network. It is a powerful tool for the system and network administrators, helping them monitor any number of applications or services running in the network without much of manual efforts."

For anybody who might want to use a program like this, they offer 30 day trial downloads, free user licenses, demos, and instruction manuals.

There ya go.

Well I can say that this could take a possibly a somewhat large amount of bandwidth, as to get an accurate result you usually have to transfer a few megs or more.

Just curious, why do you need it?

Er, you still didn't answer his question.
Why do you need it?

Just go on www.speedtest.net and click "retake test" every 30 minutes?

:pDid you read the first post? - I need a program to do this...

And as for what? Sex, does it matter? Really? - not that I won't say. Mr. Klean came across as curious... you just came across as a bit snoopy...

I need to setup a computer and have in monitor bandwith rates every 30 minutes. ... like I said... no hidden agenda.. just .. need to set it up.

.... If I were to say ... "to take down Jagex once and for all"... .. would that make you feel better? :)

Anonymity, I really don't give a fuck about what you do or anything, it doesn't concern me.
I was just saying that because you just ignored his question..

@ Sex, hhhmmm.. I must have caught you on a bad day... I am sorry if I came across as a demeaning prick, that was not my intention. I am sorry.

Well, again any help would be appreciated. Programs, ideas, hints, directions, tutorials, the like. Thanks all.

Please respect the forums and don't spam. Have a nice day.

I would think you would be able to write a scar script that would just use dslreports or some other speed test site to run a test every 30 minutes. Then you could write your own version of getuptext for whatever font they use on the site to record the results. Or you could just have scar take a screencap of the results and put it in a folder. Doesn't seem like it would take more than half an hour to get something like this up and running.
As for after a reboot, I don't know. There are commercial products out there made for webservers which can restart themselves even after a reboot and can alert you if the webserver crashed or fails. If anything like that happens, it will send you a email or sms message to alert you of a problem. I'm sure there must be some sort of program that could restart SCAR for you and get your monitoring program up and running again after a crash and reboot.

Couldn't you just use SCAR (on a VM if you need to use your computer while running) to retake speedtest and when it's done (use bitmaps to determine it..?) let SCAR save a bitmap of the screen.

RAM - Good program, however I am able to determine the amount of bandwidth being allocated... what I am trying to determine is the amount that is really being received... thanks though, very good thought

Great ideas so far guys. - Here is the thing, This will be set up for like a period of like two weeks to a month... that is a lot of bitmaps to go through... The computer needs to be able to restart and keep going after it turns back on (updates or the like)... and take a test of the current max dwn/up speeds every 30ish minutes.
