Got a computer, XP on one partition, Ubuntu on other.
2.8Ghz Pentium 4 Processor
1G DDR Ram
Intel Integrated (Shitty) Graphics
I'm going to reformat the XP partition because it's ucked up.
I want some type of windows to replace the windows partition (inb4 delete windows alltogether)
Should I install XP again?
Should I try installing Windows 7 on it (Is the computer good enough to handle it)?
Should I try some flavor of Tiny XP or other XP Builds?
And
How should I back my stuff up?
I have a 500G External.
Should I just drag all my sht onto it?
Any special programs/ways to back things up efficiently for reformats?
Besides just files on my computer help me think of things I should also backup (Firefox favorites, passwords, etc)
Thanks.
Well you could Try Tiny7, i use it and it works very well, or for gaming you might wan't try MicroXP (:

7 should run fine on that you could probably pick up some cheap graphics card from somewhere to get an improved peformance

I'd say stick with regular old XP.

Stick with the same and backup grub first.

DoubleDriver and FabsAutoBackup make things pretty fast too.

Well Boreas, not sure exactly wucha saying.
I do have GRUB, with Linux and Windows XP option when I boot.
I fked up the windows so badly I cant even open firefox, going to try a few backup programs to see if I can still get all of my passwords/settings/bookmarks from firefox, drag all my shit onto an external, and i'll try going with tiny7.
My plan is basically to just pop in the tiny7 disk, delete the xp partition, and install it on that? Am I missing anything? Over simplifying?

You may have to delete the partition in Ubuntu, and I *think* for Windows you have to format it as a NTFS (or something like that) partition. You may be able to install it in "Unallocated" space, I'm not sure.
You may not even have to delete the XP partition, you may just be able to replace it with the Tiny7 one without having to do any partitioning. For backing up the files, you should be able to just click and drag or compress then drag. Whichever your prefer.

You should back up GRUB because it will be deleted during the Windows installation.
Also, FEBE (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109) is a nice extension for backing up/restoring firefox data.

A partitioning tool is included in Windows install CDs, and it is pretty self-explanatory (from what I remember, you basically tell it what partition to install to and it installs there).

I'm completely deleting everything on the XP partition, so no need to create new partitions or anything, simply just delete XP partition, and install TinyXP onto it.
So, how exactly am I supposed to 'backup' grub? And why back it up, cant I just delete xp partition, install tinyxp partition, and setup grub like Boreas' link? Or would backing it up be easier?

Don't ever install a Tiny* windows release. Unless, of course, you WANT to be a member of a botnet ;)

They don't have botnets. All the ones I have downloaded don't, I have checked. I am sure someone would report the torrent if it had a botnet

Most of them do, they are very well hidden.

Doesn't matter how well they are hidden, they can still be found. If the windows torrents were part of a botnet, someone would reported it as containing a botnet, and then no one would download it. That's why people should read comments before downloading and not just download it.

Follow the steps in Boreas' link... there is an entire step called "back up the GRUB boot menu." If you follow all of the steps in his link, you'll be fine.

for that 1gb of ram i would stick to xp, win 7 might be to ram requiring and it will probably be very slow

If you have your original XP disc and key you can use Nlite to make your own stripped down version of XP. However with 1GB of RAM, unless you are worried about install on HD space, you could probably get it almost as good by doing a normal install and then disabling stuff after.

SO wat now. Don't use tinyXP since my comp runs fine enough for regular XP?
But tinyxp is still nicely stripped down and stuff, so why not use Tiny XP?
Also, I wouldn't know the first thing to really even do with NLite Boreas.
