Okay, so I've read around on the forums and I have one question before anyone replies to this. Please don't turn this into a Windows vs Linux (or anything else) thread. I just want advice on the topic at hand.

So here is the background knowledge:

Anyone who has been around for a long time may remember that I had a lot of questions about reformatting my computer a long time ago. Well I ended up not doing it, because of my concerns with the 20+GB of files which I didn't have a good way to back up and then put back on the computer after it was formatted. For anyone interested (it's important for my question) I am running a dual boot of Ubuntu and Vista.

So to the actual question(s):

I'm thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, and I can get a legit install for free from where I work. If I just put the CD in and do whatever magic is required to upgrade from Vista to 7, will it delete the Ubuntu partition? This is the overall goal. To have simply one OS without the Grub loader. I know that there are tips and tricks for removing Ubuntu before I upgrade, but I don't have a Vista CD, and all of the things that I've read on Google involve the CD. If there is another way to remove Ubuntu and the Grub loader to give me a clean Windows install without a CD, I would gladly follow that method.

So if anyone can help with whatever amount of questions that counts as, I would gladly appreciate it :)

Do you _want_ to remove Ubuntu?
If you install Winblows 7 properly, it will only override the Vista partition + remove the GRUB bootloader, which you can install again after the 7 install again.

I first installed Windows XP, then Windows 7 and then Debian.

Yes. I wish to only have Windows 7 on the computer in the end. I would like to remove Ubuntu and the GRUB loader.

Then just install Windows 7 and format the harddrive.

boot into Ubu live CD and just make the partition your putting w7 on override your Ubu partition.

If your looking for one on one help get on IRC and ask tootoot222. He always helps me through my PC problems.

That can be done from within the Win 7 installation CD.

I've heard that just putting the CD in wont delete the GRUB Bootloader though, is that false for the win 7 CD?

It should Delete the GRUB(or any) Bootloader, as if I recall correctly Installing Windows rewrites the MBR. (Master Boot Record)

But it doesn't take Ubuntu off, just sort of "covers it up".

This is what I've heard.

So deleting the Ubu partition and putting the CD in should both delete Ubuntu and get rid of the bootloader?

Yes, put in the Win 7 CD, then delete all partitions, format the hdd and create a new partition, install Win 7 on it and thats it :)

But it will also remove his Vista.

I want Vista to upgrade to Win 7. If the roundabout way includes deleting it and then doing a fresh install, I can live with it.

Yeah, do that and it will remove grub and install its own bootloader. Should have no problems with that

Seeing as I have done just this on my laptop, I want to ask a quick question.

Do you have two partitions, one that provides the option to boot Vista and one that provides the option to boot Ubuntu?

If so I was able to use "EASEUS Partition Master" to delete the contents of the Linux partition, merge it with my vista partition the format the drive. I was then able to install Win7 Home from the CD.

Shame though, I enjoyed using unbuntu but could not invest the time to learn how to fully utilise it. Needed the basic handed on a plate windows format :)

I have that exact situation. I haven't gotten my hands on the Win 7 CD yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I'll look into that program whenever the CD finds its way to me.

My reason for being rid of ubuntu is the same, but also because it has a history of never working with my wireless, even though Windows gets a full signal with it. The hassle of learning + not being able to look up how to learn unless I'm on windows really overpowered the desire to learn.
