I'm seriously considering the switch to KDE.

I like my GNOME, but KDE is more eye candy, and appears to have more applications native to it.

Convince me one way or the other.

KDE vs. GNOME. GO!

Linux is like Lego. You can build your own desktop environment. Both KDE and Gnome are just big packages with software aimed to look and feel the same way, work well together and generally give you a nice experience. If you dislike a component, then replace it with something else. It's that simple.

Application that are "made for gnome" or "made for kde" can be used with any desktop. This only means that that the program use a set of library functions found in their underlying gnome-libs or kdelibs. You do not need to use the actual desktops to use the applications, software made for KDE and Gnome can be used with any window manager / desktop as long as you got the proper libraries installed. There is no reason to use only applications made for the desktop you prefer, the "best software" for one task is made for KDE, the best for another task is made for Gnome. Use the best from both worlds.

In short... try them all.

Same stuff, different names.

You're showing a *very* plain picture of GNOME, while you show an OK picture of KDE. Why don't you show Ubuntu's GNOME?

I thought they both showed each doing very similar things.

Soo... I've made the switch to Debian Squeeze & KDE.

I'm loving KDE! It feels very smooth in comparison to GNOME. I also really like the flexibility of KDE and the more open nature of the software.

Now you're just making this up. The more open nature of the software? KDE more or less forces you to use the proprietary graphics drivers. I don't see how KDE is any more open than GNOME.

How is KDE more flexible? In what aspects?

Mono is a microsoft deviant.

Flex, more or less just in general it feels like it. I did make a broader sweeping statement than I intended though.

Mono is a microsoft deviant.
Face to palm.
Mono is made by Novell. It's designed to allow for natively running .NET apps in GNU/Linux. Mono is open-source and is in no way run by Microsoft.
Calling Mono a Microsoft deviant is like calling WINE a Windows deviant...

Also, I have no idea why you are behaving as if GNOME isn't 100% free (gratis and libre) software? It is.

So because GTK+ has bindings for Mono it makes Gnome less open? I'm sure QT has bindings for C# too.

I have a full gnome install on my laptop, and I have no mono installed.

E: Doesn't the second link contradict you?

I wasn't really argueing for or against, heh. But yes, it does contradict what I had said. C# in general is awful. Even if it is an open version of Microsoft's C# does not mean I want to use it.

You sure you don't have mono? I had it, and had no idea.

Yep. Don't have it. Ubuntu probably ships it though, as it ships tomboy.
