Don't really know how to solve it myself, but I found this link http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-35497-spyware-virus-has-taken-over-administrator

Trend micro used to have a browser based, virus and malware scanner/remover java client.
I don't know if it still exists or not. I think it was called housecall 56 or something?

Boot into safe mode with networking and see if you can download "Spybot - Search and destroy" and update the definitions and then scan your computer

IMPORTANT: Administrator privileges are required to run ESET Online Scanner
I cant give Administrator privileges to anything cause of the virus

Oh, you could also use Ubuntu to scan your computer and use Ubuntu or Windows Vista (not too sure) / 7 Installation CD to open the computer's registry editor to find any unknown applications that run on startup.

I suggest you just reinstall your computer then you are sure to get rid of it, take backup of important documents first, when you reinstall you are 100% to get rid of it, even if you woud find it with antivirus you never know if it got hidden rootkit or if it flare up again, thats typical, if it you receive it again after reinstallation you shoud do the same thing on the computers connected in your local network if you are in one.

See if you can run HiJackThis and post the log.
Or on another computer burn a live CD for one or more of the following scanners:
AOSS
AVG
Avira
Bit Defender
Dr. Web
F-Secure
GData
Kaspersky
Panda Security
VirusBlokAda
or Ubuntu/etc and install Clam AV.

I just thought of installing Clam AV while booted into a LiveCD of a linux distro.
Its a good AV, and should work as you are not in Windows.

Call up your manufacturer and get them to mail you recovery CDs.

Acer, your manufacturer. And it might be free or they might charge a small fee for shipping and/or the cost of the CDs/DVDs, but the recovery data itself should be free.
EDIT: Actually, if I recall correctly, I called about the issue for my Acer once, and I believe the only cost was something small (<$10?) for the CDs themselves. I forget exactly what I ended up doing, but I somehow created a recovery disk of my own. You could ask them about creating your own when you call them, and they should help seeing as they don't make any profit off of sending you recovery disks anyway.

if it came preinstalled with a os then it will probably have a recovery partition somewhere

If you've got an acer, i believe you can go into the empowering technology and somewhere in there you can create a factory default disc. can't remember if that requires admin privileges though... I've got one of those lying around somewhere....
Or, the ubuntu+ClamAV idea could work, if you have unpartitioned disc space sitting around (which you probably wont, if you haven't done anything to disc partitions). Idk if a live disc would work for what you need to do, but its worth a shot.
just read:

My acer has one, but i've no idea how to access it . (unless you have grub)
Good luck, hope you fix it :norris:.

Why is reformatting bad advice? If you have no alternative then you have no alternative. Of course reformatting right from the get-go is a bad idea if you don't want to lose any files or will have a problem re-installing all the software to make the hardware function like candy
... unless there is some secret damage caused by reformatting that I don't know about?
