Hi all,
I seem to recall there being a good number of people from the Netherlands here, and I had a few question which I couldn't satisfy just by wikipedia-learning ;)

1) What is the difference between "g" and "ch" ?
2) [kind of related to #1] How do you properly pronounce "Scheveningen" ?

Thanks :)

"g" is the infamous Dutch "spitting" sound. In order to get that right, just scrape your throat while pushing air outwards. Its the sound you make when there is a hair stuck in your larynx, when you try to imitating a flamethrower, or rattle.

"ch" isn't used standalone in the Netherlands. We do have "sch" which is a "s" followed by the Dutch Spit.
So scheveningen is pronounced like this:
s (spit-ggggg) aveninghun
