Lately, my computer has been running incredibly slow.

When i first restart it, it runs normal speed, but then after about 24 hours, i can barley open google chrome w/o my computer crashing.

i dont think its a virus because ive scanned my whole computer with AVG and Avast!

any tips on what i should do? my desktop runs slower than my laptop with half of the specs.

My specs on my computer are

4GB of RAM
320GB harddrive
Windows 7
64-bit
i5 Processor

Check your task list. Also make sure your anti virus isn't doing scans or something.

Format it :)
That's what I do when I feel my computer isn't running as smooth as I want it to.

Did you get a new desktop? I thought your desktop was an Athlon?

Reformatting isn't the only solution to everything....

Here's what I'd do:
Download and install CCleaner (http://malwarebytes.org/"MalwareBytes Anti-Malware[/url].
Turn off the internet.
Remove all anti-malware software from your computer.
Use [URL="http://piriform.com/ccleaner) to remove all junk internet files etc from your computer (check *everything* in both tabs except the "Old Prefetch Data" and "Wipe Free Space").
Defragment your register with Auslogics Reg Defrag (http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/) (find a serial off the internet to use it).
Defragment ALL your hard-drives using the in-built Windows 7 defragmenter or Defraggler (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler).
You're done.

Do you ever run MSConfig and disable the unnecessary start up programs?

What does it do?

it allows you to choose the default OS, change the order of the OS list, lets you choose which programs to run on startup, lets you enable or disable services amongst many other things

i run it every few months to make sure that nothing that i dont want to run doesnt run

Dude, why do u keep it turned on for 24hrs? When you turn it on for a long time and run programs your RAM gets used up left, right and center and also it causes heating of the circuits inside. You should turn it off like every 3 hrs, it helps save power as well.

If you still got problems, try making yourself a limited account and do all your work on that, that way if u have a virus you only delete that account while transferring the files.
Turn off aero settings, and turn off all useless visual themes etc.

As long as none of the programs you run have a memleak it shouldn't matter.

FYI computer components don't continue to heat up. Most computers have fans and ways to release hot air outside of the case.

My uptime is 4 days now, nothing wrong. CPU temp is still and always 40C.

His computer is slow, so probably there is a mem leak, restarting comp is a good way to fix this.

No, restarting your computer will not fix a memleak. If he experiences a memleak consistently then one of his programs he runs on a daily basis is broken.

Restarting your computer doesn't fix the code of those programs. It is only a bandaid fix.

Maybe there are too much stuff on your computer, you should clear it, delete something useless.

I reported your last post, but you continue to gravedig so I'd like to ask you to please stop posting on threads that have not been posted in for a while. I'm sure the author of this thread has solved this issue or moved away from it by now and doesn't require much input from anybody else :).

Restart your computer? I dont even know anyone who uses the computer for 24 hours per day.

But yeah you could always try restarting it? Seeing as that takes 2 minutes

Edit: /facepalm, didn't even notice it was a gravedig.

You may also want to use compressed air to clean out your computer. As there may be a build up of dust if you haven't already... dust is a major factor in computing speed/temp. (They go hand-in-hand)

Edit: Didn't realize this was a gravedug post. My mistake.
