Repartitioning for linux

If I have a hard drive that already has all 250gb partitioned for Windows but doesn't have all 250gb of storage used, then can I repartition it to give some of the space to a Linux installation without losing my Windows section data?

Yep, depending on the linux distro you use, it should ask you whether you wan't to use the whole drive or install alongside other existing ones.

You can, but be forewarned, you might have some data corruption with the windows partition. Its always a risk with partitioning HDDs.

Definitely use a FOSS disk partitioner though, I have no faith in the Windows partitioner.

Yeah, when I tried to install Ubuntu alongside Winblows it corrupted my Ubuntu partition AND my Winblows partition so be wary :)

Download an ISO image called G-Parted and do USB boot if your computer can do it, if not burn it to a cd, use it to shrink your drive to say 100gb or whatever you want and then the other 150gb will be unformatted and you can install linux on that
