Hey, my mom got a HP Pavilion dv4-1287cl laptop around July of '09, it only had a year warranty so that's gone. The charging port on it has apparently failed, making it impossible to charge the battery with the computer. I was wondering how I'd go about getting it fixed. Will HP even service it even though its out of warranty? Or would I have to like buy a part and install it myself? Or would I have to (I really hope not) just trash that laptop and buy a new one?

try a different charger first.. or u can buy a battery charger, put the battery in the charger, when it charges, put it in the laptop :S
Iunno take it to best buy and ask whats wrong.. or future shop or somethin

HP will service out of warranty computers but they will charge you an arm and a leg. If there is something needing to be replaced it would be cheaper and easier to you to take it to a local repairshop. There should be a little light that comes on beside the power port when it's plugged in, does that come on? Does it still power up with it just plugged it and the battery just doesn't charge?
One thing I've experienced a lot of with this issue especially with HPs is static build up. Probably about 65% of people who brought their computer to me describing this issue o fixed in 5 min because it was just a static build up. So check that first... Shut it down, remove the battery, unplug it, then press and hold the power button for 60 seconds. Then put the battery and power back in ad try again. If they doesn't work try it again with the battery in this time because some times to charge can linger in there.
Also a tip for future HP computers, avoid dealing with HP directy as much as possible. Most large name places that sell HP have a contract with them to facilitate repairs. For example I was te technician at a staples store for a few year and even if you bought your HP at futureshop and it was still within the HP warranty you could bring to us and we would deal with it. We have a special phone number and access code so we don't have to wait an hour in HP call center hold. We will also ship to them if it needs to be sent out or charge them for any repairs that are covered by the warranty. It makes your life a bajillion times easier because HP is very painful to deal with.
