Currently have Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EP43-UD3L (Socket 775) for a motherboard (according to Speccy). Looking for a new processor that has a bit more fire behind it. Have currently Intel Core 2 Duo E7600 @ 3.06GH Wolfdale 45nm Technology. Running 4GB of ram, only really use that much when rendering 3D drawings, but i think the speed is limited by my dual core processor.

Price range?
Cheapest better option would be this Intel Quad Core at 2.5Ghz

I'm sure that will be a lot/noticeably better than what you have now and get the job done, I'd get it.

Make sure your mobo can handle the newer processors though. My mobo also had Socket 775 but my new q9550 (also 775) it wouldn't have.

Are you sure Intel is cheaper than AMD? I'm pretty sure the AMD Phenom is a lot cheaper.

If you only want to spend on a processor, wait until AMD Bulldozer comes out and buy the best quad core processor you can find for your socket. (New release -> lower prices across the board)
If you're willing to spend a bit more, wait until Bulldozer comes out and buy it or an i7, depending on the reviews. I can attest that the newest generation i7's are unbelievably fast. You'd be buying proc, mobo, and ram though, so you'd be spending $250-500.

Yea, maybe for servers but for sure not for the desktop market...
I mean, AMD has server cpus out with like 12 cores, whats the point...

The socket on his motherboard is for intel only.

Yeah true. Maybe wait until bulldozer and then prices of all others should drop so buy one ten if you can wait.
And yeah I guess if you want a really nicer upgrade option new mobo/ram/proc would make your computer newer and up to date. But just a processor I'm sure especially going from dual to quad would make a very noticeable difference.

Yes, but one must consider whether it makes more sense to buy a cheap current-gen processor rather than a high end 2-gen-old processor. If you can do it with $100 more, it makes sense to go current gen, because you'll have an upgrade path.

Don't be so sure about that upgrade path if you buy intel, Intel likes to change sockets a lot.
