What video card do you use? If you don't have a 5xxx card, then it's of little use to you.
If you have a 5xxx card:
Download, install, and run the actual client: http://bitcoin.org/
Download and install AMD drivers (10.11 or newer): http://amd.com
Download and install AMD APP SDK (after doing drivers): http://developer.amd.com/sdks/AMDAPPSDK/downloads/Pages/default.aspx
Sign up for any Bitcoin pool (I prefer http://deepbit.net)
Download a GPU miner: http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=3878.0
Run the Miner you installed above.
Add the following flags: "-v -w128" (works best for 5xxx cards)
Profit.
It's a waste of time, but good luck.

If you don't even know what video card you have, then I don't think you should even begin to attempt mining; you might break something .___. (unless you misunderstood what I meant by 5xxx. 5xxx = any 5000 series card, such as 5750, 5950, etc)

Is there a reason to use the gpu client rather than a cpu client?

Probably won't run at all.

If you like 800 hashes per second (CPU) instead of 130,000,000 hashes per second (GPU), then sure. CPU is really slow and an even larger waste of time.
