I have a ASUS Radeon HD 6870

Besides just moving the sliders in Catalyst Control Center (CCC)
Are there any better ways to overclock it?
How about other programs, how is AMD OverDrive?

I think for AMD OverDrive you need a specific set of hardware, only certain chipsets on mobos, and the BE processors. I used it myself and found it alright, but not really any different from what you can do in the Vision Engine Control Centre. Also I think you can only increase the PCIe bus speed, not the clock speed of the GPU (correct me if I'm wrong).

I use MSI Afterburner (http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm).

I've heard this works for non-MSI cards too. I would try it

It does, I have a Sapphire Radeon 5830HD and it works like a charm.
