hiyaaaaaaaaa! I need to format my vista laptop, for which i dont have the os cd. Is there anyway to do it without this cd? thanks a lot xxx
As far as I know there is no legal way to do this. Unless you just want to remove all the data from the hard drive and not install an OS on it?

Download a cracked bootable copy of vista somewhere and burn it to a dvd. Boot your computer using the dvd and go through the setup instructions. after installing, install drivers for your hardware and you're good to go.

If you own a license to the product, you can legally download it from less then legal means as long as your downloading the exact product and not a modified or cracked version.
ie: you own a license to win vista 32 bit, you couldn't (legally) download the 64-bit version, but you could (legally) download the 32-bit version
Though if you torrent it, it means your sharing it with other people and still breaking the law. But if you got it from a hosted site such as rapidshare, then legally speaking your in the clear.
I promise I'm not searching through all your posts and disagreeing with you as much as it might seem like it, please don't hate me!
Also, as home said, I'd recommend win 7, vista pretty much stinks.

Could you use another computer to download it and then burn it to a CD?

Do you want to format the harddisk and/or install a new OS on it?
What OS are you talking about? Vista sucks big time

Get a Windows 7 disk, and boot the computer using the DVD. On one of the screens you can delete partitions and format them all you want so you can do that there. You could also get a linux live CD, I often use that to format and delete partitions as windows often doesn't let me format stuff because of some privileges problems and whatnot
Don't worry about it. I don't mind if someone disagrees with me as long as they explain why and not just screams "YOU'RE WRONG!". Thank you very much for correcting my mistake. I appreciate it.

If you really want to just wipe the drive clean, I suggest using: http://www.killdisk.com/
Read / Watch the tutorials before you attempt to do anything with it, though. Also make sure you have the burned CD with the OS you downloaded on it before you try it.

Couldn't you just make a new partition? Install on that one, then delete the old one after?

The problem is, the win7 ive bought is download only, and ofcourse as my second computer is a mac, i dont believe i can create a disc with the win 7 download.
So the problem lies when my vista computer wont let me use the internet on it.
I was planning on using the partition and hoping that the operating system of vista was in the partitioned hard drive. As the win7 ive bought is an upgrade only version.
Howwwwwwever! now the computer wont even let me log on and i get a "windows is installing updates" for hours on end. man i hate windows
