I'm scared out of my wits right now, My laptop froze and I had to force shut it down, by holding the power button down.
Now whenever I turn it on, it'll stay on for Bout 5 seconds, then will shut off and repeat the process.

It was running fine not an hour back and all of a sudden this....

Any idea what's wrong???

It could be your BIOS or your OS
Is any part of your system cracked software?

Might be a loose connection somewhere.

Possibly between your hard-disk and your motherboard, seeing as it starts up OK, but doesn't go into windows mode
If it is, then there's not much to do other than sending it in for repair or punching it a couple of times with a bat, which is not exactly recommended.. :p

What kind of laptop is it?

E: For the record: I have a laptop with a loose connection which functions the exact same way as you described. I usually bang it against the floor 3 times and that does the trick.. I really should try to fix it someday, but meh.. I'm too lazy

If it's a mac then it runs a solid state... making the hard disk almost ruled out, but the motherboard connection to the hard disk may be a plausible answer. On a much broader topic, is your screen just shutting off and the laptop is still running or is it for sure just powering down?

Same problem happened to mine. I had to buy a new harddrive, computer was still never the same, still had a lot of bugs.

Let's just hope there's a simple solution to this

Who knew others use the "bang it till it works" methood.
Among all the laptops I had one has the same thing happening that I too drop here and there till it works, not recommended. I just one day got so fed up with it that I threw it on the ground, since then it would freeze less often. Its a piece of s*it that I had the intention of destroying at the time.
DO NOT DO.

EDIT: id take it in to repair, sounds like a motherboard prob

Yeah laptop prices are just getting blown up...
@Sin: You keeping on starting up may fry the mother board if there is loose connections. It's similar when building a computer, if the motherboard isn't set up properly you fry it

Laptop overheating I'd assume. Or Bios firmware needs re-flashing. Could be that porn -_-

Try this. I know it sounds dumb, but it may be your issue. I had something *extremely* similar happen to my laptop when I installed ubuntu. It's an issue that affects many Acer laptops, apparently. Though you haven't said what kind you have.

Unplug dat power cord.
Now pull out your battery.
And any other mystery power connections you have.
Plug it all back in, and try to boot.

note, it doesn't work (for me) unless you unplug both the cord and the battery.
Good luck, sonny boy.

I'm getting so worried atm, this thing is like my baby....
My dad is an accountant, so he's trying to find someone to give it too.

Sounds like hard drive might be broken maybe.

When you start it up can you like tap F2, or F9 (or somehting) to get into the BIOS?

Or after the initial screen stuffs, tap F8 over and over and see if you can boot into safe mode.

That's if he's getting the interact-(able?) screens. I would say hard drive too, because if it's booting, then the BIOS should be fine, but the hard drive isn't contributing the Login interface.

I'll upload a video of what happens, give me a few hours.

Try the function keys too and tell us what happens!

Also try getting like an Ubuntu OS CD, burn it, and try running it.

That way you can run Ubuntu without even installing it (I believe) as a 'Live OS' and see if everything is working fine or not.

Okay, giving it a go now.

So I tried F2 to F12, and all that happened was a beeping sound came and then it shut down.
Its like it's on a timed switch off or something :s
I can't access the bios at all :s

This is clever... I may try this on one of my busted rigs

Hmm... I believe even if the HD is dead that you should definitely be able to get into BIOS, I think BIOS is stored on it's own chip. This doesn't sound too good :/

I have worked with repairing computer for a while.

Most of the time, in your situation, I would try to remove all static charges inside the electronic components of the laptop. Please try these steps:

- Turn off computer
- Unplug charger
- Remove the battery. (This is important)
- Press the POWER BUTTON continuously for 30 seconds, and release it.
- Insert the battery.
- Turn on Computer.

PS: This method does NOT have any side effects, feel completely secured.
Hope, your laptop is fixed soon.

Just read a manual, pretty sure F2 is the BIOS key.
So turn on a tap F2 every few seconds, hmm you said it just beeps and turns of :/ wtfa! Maybe try again, with slower timing

My Dell came with a utility partition and I was able to test and run stress tests on everything connected to it. If you are able to boot into the live CD there probably is software that allows you to do this but I'm not sure. I also remember being able to test a hard drive through BIOS settings for a laptop. I had a similar problem with a desktop that would start up and couple seconds later just restart and keep restarting at the one point. Some guy looked at it and said our PSU was fried and that we needed a new one. It boots up fine now and has been running for a couple years. I agree with YoHoJo, if you can't boot into BIOS it's more than a HDD problem.
