View Full Version : Building a custom computer - A little help?
So most of you know that my Laptop crashed (just the hard drive i'm guessing).
I'm looking to purchase a new computer, but would rather build my own.
Here's what I have so far -
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=6_112&item_id=033493
NZXT Guardian 921 RB Crafted Series Gaming Case with Blue LED
89.99

4GB DDR3 MEMORY PC10666 (1333MHZ)
29.99
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_443&item_id=043056

http://www.factorydirect.ca/catalog/product_spec.php?pcode=HA7201
HARD DRIVE 250GB 3.5" IDE (RB)

I haven't gotten three things -
Motherboard, GFX Card, Sound Card.
If someone could go to CanadaComputers.net or FactoryDirect.ca and let me know what are some good choices, that'd be awesome :)

What budget are you trying to stay within?
Well i've already touched 500$, can we keep it at around 700-800?
I have a sound card in mind,
http://www.factorydirect.ca/catalog/product_spec.php?pcode=SO0064
It's only $7.99... so..
Here's the motherboard i'm looking at -
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_334&item_id=043291
A graphics card is important, so most likely my dad will pay for it. But lets still keep it near 700$.

Would be great if you keep the list in the first post updated because i am looking for a new custom computer too.

I wouldnt get the APU if you plan on getting a gfx card, for about the same price u can get a AMD-6100 6 core<- Very good cpu imo
cpu-http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_64&item_id=042550
And for the motherboard, I use this one, I like it, has 8 usbs, and crossfire support, also in the bios the overclock genie makes it super easy to over clock your cpu
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_335&item_id=046001
As for the gfx card I like nvidia better then radeon and i use the gts 450, but if you rather not mix amd and nividia id probly get the radeon 6770
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_558&item_id=038866
and as for the hard drive you linked you wouldnt be able to use it with the motherboard i suggested because it doesnt have a ide port
And tigerdirect.com ftw lol
Edit: just noticed you linked a sound card, the on-board sound on the mobo i linked is very good, you probly wont increase sound quality on it unless you want to spend like 100$ on a sound card
Hope this helped
Thanks a ton!
Enjoy my +5, and can you find a Hard Drive compatible with the motherboard you chose for me?
That'd be awesome :3

ewww ubuntu lol...But your list seems good lol. You should be able to run 85% games on maxed settings with that rig :)
And like Imanoobbot said you could probly do with a little better ram
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_311_312_613&item_id=045720
those are a pretty good buy, But the ones you have should be suffeciant(I cant spell lol) for normal tasking, but if you want more multi tasking capabilitys I'd go with the ones I linked, But yea the ones you have are fine.
You need more RAM. Should be cheap to get at least 8, preferable 16GB.
Not sure about your GFX, what do you need the machine for? If you're not gaming you have no need for a med-high end card. Any random GF500 or ATI5xx0 will do.

Nah, it's just until I can download an umm..... 'borrowed' version of Windows 7 ;)
And thanks a ton for your help =]
It's going to cost me roughly 700$, half of which my dad will pay.
350 x 1.6 = 560M.
Going to have to sell 560M for it :D

Sin, get a SSD while you're at it. How much space do you need? If 128GB is enough for you, I'd invest in one of these as you could probably pick one up for only a little over $100, and you will love it so much more.
But once you go SSD, you'll hate all computers with HDD's lol.

I doubt 128GB is enough haha.
Considering the mass amount of files I download :p
Atleast 40-50GB/month xD
If gaming, you definitely should have at least 8GB. You will hate yourself for getting only 4GB. RAM is dirt cheap nowadays anyway.
I am a GeForce fan, so I guess I can't say much about ATI cards ;) Good luck anyway.

You don't use SSD for download. SSD is for putting your static files, like your OS, so that you get crazily fast boot times (<20s for win7).

Ohh, I see. Another reason for a SSD is so that it doesn't crap out after a while...no platter to spin! Although it's rare, but it happened to your laptop. It also happened to my mom and dad's separate computers recently, so I'll never buy a HDD again. SSD's were known for a while with having a fail rate, but it's better than HDD's now.

I also say get 8GB RAM. It's not that much more money and it's way worth it.
Well my argument vs the HDD is I've heard of a lot of them failing recently, including my mom and dad's like I said. The speedy times are a plus as well.

You need a HDD anyway, SSD is not meant to be used for torrent/download and if you use it like that, they will just end up slowing down to the performance of a standard HDD, which is a waste of cash. and yes they're expected to fail after sometime, depending how much slavery you put it on and product quality and the environment. Just spend quality money on it so that it won't betray you when you need the data the most. (that means, regular backup onto other removable media)
Thisll be my first timeassembling a computer, so im practically clueless haha...

That's most certainly not true. Read/scan this:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-reliability-failure-rate,2923.html
They last longer. There are no moving parts, it's simple.
Also, everything will fail/slow down after some time. All technology. But by that time, most people will have bought something new or upgraded.
But yes, definitely backing up everything periodically is the smartest thing to do in either case.

From what I have read the Bulldozer setup has a horrible chipset and causes bottlenecks in CPU calculations. Not sure if this is still true though.

I have a amd fx 6100, and it doesnt bottle neck at all its performance is great, only prob i had is when overclocking it I overheated it with the stock cooler, easily fixed with a cheap aftermarket cooler

You should go for solid state hard drive- I'm sure they're compatible with what you want. they also run a lot faster and don't time out your documents.

They're just better in general. Longer life span, faster boot times (and way faster, at that), no moving parts so if you drop it there's less risk of harm. Not that this is even an issue because it's hardly ever free...but just saying.
Only downfall is the price, but the longer they've been out, it's getting better.
Off topic but sort of on: My friend and I got a Macbook at the same time. He got the pro, I'd already had the pro, and I got a new Macbook Air with a SSD. He had a HDD. We ran a disk read/write program...mine was about 6x faster. LOL. He was pissed.

It would be recommended to get a bigger hard drive than 250gb ( would go quite quick depending on your usage), try 500gb-Terra-byte
I highly Advise NOT to get any sort of lights in your case, they look cool for a start then get annoying after a while.
Plus if you want an awesome hard drive get an SSHD (Solid State Hard Drive)
Put your OS on it and your system will boot extremely Quickly.
Feel Free to Pm for any more help or queries.

SSDs are not for storage. You use them as boot drives, and perhaps for you favorite games/applications. They're too expensive, too small, and suffer from slight desegregation with each write (thus, you want to avoid file I/O (or really, just I, because reading causes no problems). This isn't to scare you off of them, of course. If I had the money, I'd totally throw one in my system.
A case with LEDs is super annoying, particularly when you have it in your room.
8 gigs of ram is probably plenty, and shouldn't cost much at all. I have trouble using 6.
Almost any SATA HDD will work. Thus, it is up to you to find one which is reliable, fast, and quiet (if you want to pay for that).
Also, check out tinyurl.com/falconguide - it's not a difinitive guide, but it's pretty good. I wouldn't just pick a row and stick to it exactly, but rather use it as something to base your system off of
if you want to OC, you need a cooler. hyper212+ is good and cheap, but there are also some really nice closed-loop watercooling systems for 60-100 USD
dont forget fans, i guess....
don't cheap-out on your case. Remember, that every dollar that you save has to come from something being removed.
tomshardware.com has AWESOME CPU/GPU benchmarks, and also publishes a list of CPUs and GPUs which are the best for the price at different ranges
Good luck, and of course, have fun ;)
I personally have a 64 GB SSD with my OS (windows 7) on it. I really notice the difference when I'm at a friends' house and using their computers. Even though they also have pretty good computers with atleast a quad core, my PC seems to respond about twice as fast for small tasks like opening the start menu. Obviously it just takes a small amount of time, but the increased speed it noticiable even though it's just a couple milli seconds for small tasks. But I notice it and I love it :P
If you are looking to spend ~700$ I wouldn't suggest it though.
Here's my FINAL list, can someone please tell me if it's all compatible? That'd be awesome ^^

Sin could I recommend this RAM? G Skill is quality, and you'd save a good bit. I know you like the canadacomputers.com website, but won't this save you ~$30?

Your case-

Not sure about credibility of this website. Says Canada though :) I'd call if I were you. If I totaled that up right, it's at least $65 in savings.
Minus the case and processor though, you still save $30 on both your RAM and Power Supply.

I'm always hesitant about OEM HDDs, as they lack the mountains of protective packaging that you get if you go out and buy one, but it'd probably be surrounded by millions of shipping peanuts, so I guess that's fine. Other than that (and shopping around for different sites, but you've been shown that), your build seems pretty solid.

Obviously it just takes a small amount of time, but the increased speed it noticiable even though it's just a couple milli seconds for small tasks. But I notice it and I love it :P
If you are looking to spend ~700$ I wouldn't suggest it though.
It's so true, even if some things are only a bit faster, you notice it and it's like AHHH! Haha. I love my SSD, never a HDD again!
That's because you're not wasting time for the drive to get up to speed and start reading ;)
Very true about the OEM HDD's, but they do a pretty good job with packaging. Especially credible places like Newegg, Canadacomputers, and TigerDirect.
And yup, no platter = no time for it to speed up and find the info. :D Fast fast fast.
BUT as of right now, I'm also building a custom computer and would never buy a 500GB one, too expensive at the moment. I wish we were in 2014 or so lol. But a small one like JJ isn't much $$, then a ~320GB HD does the trick for speeding up everything and keeping cost down.

Sin noooooo don't get that CPU!! You are not going to like it I'm almost 100% sure of it. Get either an i5, or even an i3.
Just my 2 cents, but definitely lookup some reviews of the bulldozer line, not that great of reviews.
Also, you are definitely going to want 8gb AT LEAST of ram, seriously.
Lastly, have fun :p my first build was my favorite (just don't screw the motherboard directly to the case, which is what I did, then plug it in)

Tiger = amazing.

No problem. It helps that I'm an Accounting major in college going for my Masters in Computer Science hopefully, so I like computers, and I like saving money. I was instantly attracted to the thread. ;)
cause, the CPU didn't get great reviews, but as far as I know, it was because they promised so much more. It's still a good CPU for the price so I hear and from what I've read.
8GB RAM= definitely. For the link I gave him, $38 for 8GB. It's a steal, and heck, 4GB is like $23 or something for a good brand. Double for $15 more is awesome.

Heh, imo your PSU is WAY more then you need. You only need a big one like that if your running huge graphics cards in SLI and multiple hard drives etc. I only have 580w (but really top line PSU) and I run a little above what you have listed power wise.
Your list looks pretty good though, honestly I wouldn't go for a neat case like the one you have listed. I've used the $40-$60 cases for my friends builds and they work good. Use the extra bucks saved on case for 8gb of ram imho.
Edit:
Also drop ~$80 more on graphics card and get a EVGA GTX 480 if you want to run any game on max settings. It's rank 6th in benchmarks atm, I just got one recently so glad I did.

Narcle, he posted his final list in a post on this page. Do you recommend that case? Can you point me to a good case you've used in one of your builds...? I'm also in the market for a good but cheap one. I don't want LED's or anything, just a solid case with good airflow.
Oh, and we convinced him on 8GB RAM. :)

Ah I didn't see his final case choice heh. Honestly I find that simple is better, last builds for my friends I used http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147023 but honestly I trust the rating system on newegg. Top rated case atm is $60, it looks nice.
E:
Also 600w will handle any standard build atm.

I'm assuming your canadian, so I'm looking at the canadian section of newegg. Shipping is expensive so you might want to find an equivalent dealer.
Case: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066&cm_sp=Cat_Computer_Cases-_-Spotlight-_-11-129-066
If you want blue, thats your guy. It's this week's featured deal, comes capable of watercooling if you want to, has awesome ventilation, will fit everything, and is like 55 bucks with the deals. Antec is a good company to go with, or coolermaster.
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504 Processor, don't crap out on the processor. If you're willing to spend 800 bucks, do NOT get AMD. They're way behind intel, and you can get an i5 (the top of the line unless you're going to render something) for like 215 bucks WITH shipping to canada. This processor will serve you well for a long time, and save you money in the long run. If you're building a computer, use this.
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128540
I'm not a pro on motherboards, but this one seems cheap and will get the job done. Don't get a super cheapo one because it will drag your components down. This one has usb 3.0, which is good for the future. If you're going to look around MAKE SURE it's LGA1155, and you should be good.
Graphics card: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130770
This isn't needed. Hopefully you've read this far, because the most important thing is here: With the high end cpu I picked, you do NOT need a graphics card. You can easily run batlefield 3 or any game on high with just the cpu's integrated default graphics. They are kick ass on the ivy bridges. Make sure the motherboard supports integrated graphics (I'm pretty sure that one will, google should hold the answer) I'm not factoring this in the price because the processor basically has graphics as good as this in it. But if you want, this or a 560 ti is high end but not super nerd rich 1000+ gpus.
RAM: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231309
The last thing I'm not crapping out on for you. Since we're on a botting site, I'm assuming you want ram to support like 10 bots at once? There's your guy. If you just want enough for the average user, look up 8 gig DDR3, it should be half the price, around 40 bucks.
HDD: This is a tough one. Basically any hard drive will work. You can go with segate, they're pretty good. Western Digital is the highest end in the business though. If you're going to splurge on a WD, get a caviar BLACK. They're the best ones by far. The others aren't worth it. Here is the 500 gig WD caviar black, you can get 1 terabyte for like 20 bucks more though, and 1.5 tb for 20 bucks more than that. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136795
Disk Drive: Not even needed anymore, pick one up for <20 if you are going to use it to install the OS and drivers.
OS: Not sure what you're going to do. Many people don't buy their OS, one way or another. I wouldn't really trust a lot of the alternates, but here is windows 7: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986
You could also do linux or even mac if you want.
Power supply: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017
You shouldn't need more than 600 watts, especially without a gpu. This one has a 25 dollar mail in rebate, so its a great time to buy. Don't get a crappy power supply, it could cost you time and money. Spend the extra 30 bucks and save headaches and like 200 bucks later when the crappy one fries your cpu.
This comes to about 800.This build will satisfy you for years. Hope you enjoy, this took like 20 minutes to find all these

SSD's Speed up every pc cause of the write and read speed,
also u should go for minimal 8gb of ram DDR3 ram is very cheap now adays.
and it boost preformance well as support for alot of bots.
and i agree on getting a Intel atleas a 2500k i5 or a i7 this because the architecture of it is alot better.
as os just use windows because simba is the best compatable with windows and a lot of programs you use to use is diffrend on Like linux ( i only use linux for my vps's).
and about the PSU (power supply unit) you want to use a energie efficient 1 because otherwise you computer uses alot of electricity.
and dont dare to buy a sound card there all crappy.
I hope i helped a bit :)
pm if u have questions
Chucky.
