In my civics class, we are doing this simulation, and I've been sued... I'm the Prime minister(this is all Canadian) and I was xfering money from the government to me secretly. Does that break any Canadian laws? Any Idea what I can say in my defense, or maybe a site where I can read up on Canadian laws?
Thanks Guise!

That's embezzling government funds, of course you're completely liable for prosecution..

http://www.hg.org/embezzlement.html

This is pretty useful ^

Whoever embezzles, steals, purloins, or knowingly converts to his use or the use of another, or without authority, sells, conveys or disposes of any record, voucher, money, or thing of value of the United States or of any department or agency thereof, or any property made or being made under contract for the United States or any department or agency thereof; or Whoever receives, conceals, or retains the same with intent to convert it to his use or gain, knowing it to have been embezzled, stolen, purloined or converted Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.

E: Reading into it more I found these: http://www.lawyers.ca/statutes/criminal_code_of_canada_theft.htm

Theft

Theft

322. (1) Every one commits theft who fraudulently and without colour of right takes, or fraudulently and without colour of right converts to his use or to the use of another person, anything, whether animate or inanimate, with intent

(a) to deprive, temporarily or absolutely, the owner of it, or a person who has a special property or interest in it, of the thing or of his property or interest in it;

(b) to pledge it or deposit it as security;

(c) to part with it under a condition with respect to its return that the person who parts with it may be unable to perform; or

(d) to deal with it in such a manner that it cannot be restored in the condition in which it was at the time it was taken or converted.

... Guess I'm getting fined... lol

Any idea what I can say to defend myself? Is it even worth trying to defend myself with concrete evidence that I transfered the money in the persecutors hands?

Utilize character witnesses familiar with your background and daily work throughout your defense. These witnesses should be taken from the workplace to maintain context for your case of honest performance on the job.

Speak with your attorney to develop sound explanations for every inconsistency in your defense. You should be able to explain gaps in your account and miscalculations in your country's budget without hesitation.

Examine phone records from your office and home to determine potential points made against you by the prosecution. You should know the purpose of every phone call made during the alleged period of embezzlement to help your defense.

Submit awards for merit and service as prime minster as a demonstration of your level of trustworthiness. These materials will provide vital background material for jurors.

Plead guilty, talk about inevitable corruption of human beings etc and make yourself look like a very sorry bastard.
I could come up with a good defense if there actually were a good reason for you to steal all that.
if all else fails, offer free strip club trips to all jury members(that is, if you have a jury)

It sounds like you think I'm actually being fined... This is just a simulation game in civics class. :p

@litoris There was no reason... I just saw the opportunity and took it... :) I'd rather not make a fool out of myself, I still have to live in this country for the rest of the term. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll get friends of mine in the jury, and I'll try to bribe them as you said. :D

Lol, when in doubt, say you were threatened, or blame it on someone who would make it even more scandalous. Someone at a higher position than you!

Just go hard, deny it and act like a boss, use your powers as PM to impose an injuction and get it silenced?

Footy

I dont think I can silence it. I did come up with an idea though. I'll just say I was paying myself, the PM's gotta be paid, doesn't he? :)

Yeah, :D
My class is the only civics class this year doing the game, so I got kind of lucky. I'm thinking of pleading temperary insanity, pleading innocent saying It was a payment, or hope they dont mention embezzlement and say I didn't break any laws.

Well, I don't know if you thought about this one yet:

You can always flee the country to live in the Philippines. Maybe in one of the most densely populated places on earth. You have lots of money, so you should be able to hide for quite some time.

Also, you could pull a Saddam and dig yourself a hole to live in for a few years until it all blows over. Just an idea :)

If there was a move-to-Phillapines button on this webiste, I would go for it!
