View Full Version : Fun things to with magnesium?

I have a 1'' strip of Mg that I would like to entertain myself with. I know that it is bright when you burn it but I was wondering if anyone had any better ideas. So far I have thought of burning it as a strip or making thermite, but I don't know how to powder it or the aluminum...

Burning it makes really bright light, or you could drop it in phospheric acid and it smokes and bubbles, its mildly entertaining. Someone else might have better idea's, those are mine.

I don't have any phospheric acid :(, going to google if I can make it.

I think its something you'd have to buy online/in some chemists store.

Internet says online or in a hardware store in the paint dept. Darn.

Get some from the paint department?

I thought about it but I don't want a litre of it and it and it costs $10.50... oh well, thanks for the idea :)

Do you have, or can you get aluminum powder?

(Taking a course in chemistry...Interesting)

Whatever you do, don't pour water on it while it's burning lol. This video demonstrates:

Will do :p. But unfortunately I don't have that much :D.

@JoeyGupta

I have aluminum, but not powdered. I will google if there is a effective way of powdering it.

E: Read this, especially the comments lol. Why I don't order anything like this online :D

Wrap it in aluminum foil then put it in the microwave :D

Put it in the blender.
WILL IT BLEND, THAT IS THE QUESTION.

Don't have any spare microwaves or blenders, but maybe I could pick a used one up for a few bucks..

Definitely just burn it and then pour water on it. But make sure you video record it so that I can watch :)

Put it in hydrochloric acid. It'll create small bubbles hydrogen gas I think, haven't took chemistry in a few years though.

HydroChloric Acid, dry it, then Burn it, and pour water on it while burning.

HydroChloric Acid, dry it, then Burn it, and pour water on it while burning.

Hydrochloric Acid would dissolve it.

This does seem to be the best plan, and I will record it :D. I also might start saving up rsgp, I can buy a 25g roll on ebay for $7.00 cdn! Thats 14m! :D

Guys, the easiest thing to do is to oxidize it to its max, use Aluminum Powder and the Magnesium as the oxidizer.

You can easily make mini hand grenades, if controlled properly!

Hydrochloric Acid would dissolve it.

This is correct, that's the calorimetry experiment we did in chem today :)

As far as I know, if you simply put it in water you will get an explosive reaction. It doesn't have to be burning.

Of course with a small ammount, it wont be very explosive.

Pu it in someone's teapot/coffee mug/soup/raw meat

That looks nuts.. Get the best reaction from it and post it up here!

No, unfortunately it has to be burning and there has to be a large amount of it. I think you're thinking of alkali metals.

if you want to spend it on magnesium, i suggest pottasium- its nicer to play around with and isnt that much more expensive compared to alternatives - Cesiumn (worth its weight in gold)

I imagine cesium reacts pretty well in water...

Wrap it around det-cord

Ian

Just to clarify, i live in Canada. No det cord, even though I wish i could :). As for potassium, I don't know where to get it. Too poor for cesium too lol.
