I've been trying like crazy to figure this out, checking this, disabling that, which sometimes alltogether ruins my connection therefor forcing me to totally do a system restore. So here I am asking for a little help and here is my problem...

My old laptop had great wirless connection, the bars would almost always be 5, rarely 4, when Im in my living room. I gave that laptop to my cousin, and decided to get another one. This one being supposedly "better". However the connection on here is always around 3 bars, sometimes 4, when Im in my living room.

So it has me thinking that it cant be the connection but the laptop, am i right? Is there something i can enable disable to make the connection better.

Both the laptops were HP.
Any help appreciated...

It could be a lot of things causing your signal to be weaker.. 3 Bars still is not that bad you shouldn't lag much on that.. One cause could be your WiFi channel.. (Default often 6) if you live in an apartment, or a neighborhood and have other houses close that are also sending out a WiFi signal on channel 6 it will cause yours to weaken then before, it could also just be the brand of chipset that laptop has in it, your router could just simply be starting to show it's age.. There isn't really setting you can change to up your signal strength within your laptop.. However you can in your router.. try logging in, changing the channel around 1, and 11 are normally the best choices as but any change can increase your signal strength.. Move your router, objects around the router block the signal and weaken it..

Idk if this helps or anything but why not post it so you can see it for yourself.
You can boost the signal on some laptop that have internal wifi adapters. To do this click on your start menu -> control panel -> system -> click the hardware tab -> click the Device Manager button -> find Network adapters node on the list tree -> right click on the wireless adapter -> select properties

Look through the properies for something like power save mode and turn it off. You can also look for any signal power options and turn it to the max. Every manufacturer has different options so you might have to just play with it though trial and error. Remember to only change one property at time. If your signal gets worse change it back. This will help find the best possible signal without breaking anything.

Turning the power safe option off and increase signal power will decrease battery life so you might want to get your ac adapter near by.

There probably isn't anything you can do, the only thing you could change is to up the power going to the card/chip but that would require custom firmware. I have the same problem as well. (You could put tinfoil in an arc around the back of your router lol)

Go into your routers website and change your channel to something other than 6. Just search for the website by typing in the name of your router in google.

Thanks for the help guys.
I've found the channels and managed to change them to 11. Im in my room and the bars are max. I just hope tomorrow when I get into the living room, it's improved from 3 to at least constant 4, will post if not.
