Many of the projects here are hosted on github. SRL, Smart and simba for example. When you create changes to that source it will be on your forked repo, which is like a copy from the official version. When you want your changes to be applied to the official version you create a pull request. This pull request will then be read by the maintainer/developers of the official version. They decide if it will be added.
