Wrong section. But have you tried rebooting?

I can't remember how to do it exactly and I can't check as I've got Windows 8, but I think under Personalise there is something to do with bit colours? I know age of empires lowers the colours. >.<

But try rebooting if you haven't tried that first.

What graphics drivers do you have? I have nVidia drivers and I can change my color depth in the nVidia control panel. Intel and AMD graphics should have a control panel too.

Right click desktop -> screen resolution -> advanced settings -> whatever tab -> change your colour to 32 bit (I believe this is your problem)

beat me to it. Went to check my colours and kept trying to close your picture haha,
I have the option for 16bit, I presume my current 32bit is better?

I don't have the option to change my color depth in the monitor tab, I have to change mine in the nVidia control panel. lol

To prevent this from happening in the future, right click your AoE2 desktop shortcut, go to the Compatability tab, and check "Disable Desktop Composition". :)
