Don't get caught!

I hope to learn a thing or two by watching the stream - maybe get some insight on detection. But I doubt they will do anything particularly revealing on stream.

Relevant JMod comments on the thread suggest that they will be checking for past botting as well, although I don't know how this will work if there is nobody logged in to investigate in the first place.

I really think this is just an act. It's possible they have been collecting Mouse Movements the past several months, flagging accounts, then automating the ban process on the 21st, but I doubt it considering it's Jagex. I'm going to leave a Wines bot running just to see what happens, but I have a feeling this is just Jagex trying to act like they care. Or it could be the 'reveal' of a new BotWatch, who knows.

I fear well see huge ban wave but having in mind its jagex odd seems very low. Going to leave activities as usual during stream.

Don't they usually just accept player reports for these kinds of things?

Last time I watched, it seemed that way.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about getting busted unless you're an obvious bot e.g. green dragons, or using a bad auto clicker that is easily noticed by players.

To be on the safe side, in case they are collecting names now for the event, I'm taking a break to do some questing! :)

I see you guys are prett confident that this won't be anything. Has jagex/pmods/jmods been known to exaggerate events such as this?

It will be interesting to watch. They could give away something. I won't be able to watch this though :( Living down under sometimes has its negatives

I don't think it's so much that they tend to exaggerate events like this (although they might; I don't have intimate knowledge of any previous events), it's moreso that SRL tends to have more complex scripts that react to failure states (ie. they don't just autoclick every 2 minutes on a piece of ivy and eventually click an imp and get stuck). This, along with the fact it's color and therefore not as easily detectable as something like powerbot makes it much less likely that SRL users will get banned.

I believe this all started on OSRS and now they're doing an event on RS3. But like others have mentioned, it seems more like a PR gesture than an actual effort to step up detection.

Yeah that's what it seems like, and what they have always done in the past. Will be interesting to see though, was planning on watching the youtube video they put up to see how it went.

Small bump for more awareness. I'd caution against botting obviously in the leadup to the event, especially if you're using a similar IP to a main, as they claim to be collecting information on accounts that will then be banned during the event.

Again, not sure how that works if we're logged out for PR purposes. They can ban us offline anyway but it wouldn't make for a good livestream, "hey guys, thanks for tuning in. we just banned 1k accounts. see you next time!" :p

I watched one of the OSRS ones before and they seemed to go to popular botting places like dragons and whack everyone in sight.

The person was asking someone if a user was a bot. When they got back a yes, goodnight. Then everyone had some lols.

Probably checking all the crap we know they can detect but for some strange reason don't bother to.

yikes that's pretty scary. I'm gonna just not log in on that day.

I remember one time they accidentally banned a legit player, haha. He ended up getting unbanned after he complained via Reddit or Twitter and they looked into it. Ever since then players have been complaining that they were too also wrongly banned but a mod will eventually come in and deny that.

The last Bot Busting live stream they did for 07 was kind of fun to watch. But for those of you hoping to get some insight into detection methods, you're gonna be disappointed.

When they were busting on 07 they already had a list of accounts they were going to ban, regardless of if they were online or not. Mod Weath was just going around checking to see if an account was online, and if it was he would call it out to the Busters who would then telly the account to them, kill it, collect its worthwhile items and clean its bank, rinse and repeat. It was really funny to see botters who were watching the live stream. Their name would get called, and they would start hopping from world to world to avoid the Busters. They wouldn't screw with them very long, after 2 or 3 tries Weath would just drop the hammer regardless.

All detections will have already happened by the time the stream goes live. So we're not going to even get a hint into their methods. Say they have a list of 1000 accounts they're going to ban. They'll scroll those 1000 accounts to see who's online and hammer them. They may only ban 50 accounts during the stream, but all 1000 accounts will be banned in the end. So I would say go ahead and bot during the stream. They're not looking to "catch" people botting, they already know who they're going to ban. They just wanna get bots that are online so they can collect their loot.

I never watched the streams Mod Weath did, but if they're cleaning their bank and just dropping everything on the floor for players to take, this literally accomplishes nothing. You're still dumping Gold into the economy, and it'll take less than 2 hours for a bot to take that bots place. This is how you know it's just a PR stunt, it's only for Jagex to get by until Runescape dies. It's them fooling their community into thinking they're legitimately doing something about it, while they milk the userbase with MTX.

Anyways, I've stopped my bots completely until the 21st passes. Only really because I've been funding an account i'm working on with farmed GP, if I can prevent losing the account, i'm going to.

They stated that the bot possessions in this stream event are being donated to charity (WWF).
But yeah, this still screams PR.

This isn't what they did at all. The whole point of these busts is to donate all the bots' loot to the WOG. In the 07 stream, they tellied the bots to a small single island right by Tutorial Island. There are no other players around, and they couldn't get there if they wanted to. So all the loot dropped on that island, the Busters collected it and their banks, then at the end they took all the loot to the WOG.

It will be something similar for RS3 no doubt. It may not be Tutorial Island, but the loot that the bots drop will have no way to get back into the economy. It will be going to the WWF.

Didn't @Flight get banned during one of these on his main? This was OSRS though. I think he'd like to chime in on this, seeing how he has previous experience.

Seems as if bot busting has started early. Players claim to have seen the "big bot busting hand" come to crush players at Seren Stones.

Seems like people are becoming afraid. I haven't seen the hand in years though, can anyone else confirm that they are ramping up bans?

I don't think there are many Stone of Seren miners here, and if there are, we should be safe :P

I'd like to think that the seren stone miners here are a little more advanced than the autoclickers that people easily notice and complain about. I was using Justin's miner the other day and I ended with me still mining a seren stone with obvious pickpocketing loot in my inventory (suggesting some sort of recovery) which is a situation where an autoclicker would have been totally screwed. I hope that they are focusing on those instead of us.

I originally thought that, after my original main was banned for rune-crafting via the Abyss. But as history repeats itself, I've had multiple accounts banned only from botting Runecrafting in this location. That leads me to believe it wasn't a matter of wrong place, wrong time but the method and/or location itself is prone to being under heavy "Jagex-radar".

My accounts that have been banned from abyssal rune-crafting only:

• Original main account: Banned twice (perm) [50-97 RC]
• Secondary abyssal runecrafting account: Banned twice (perm) [44-76 RC]
• Second main account: Banned twice (perm) [50-91]
• Third main account: Banned once (ceased botting in the Abyss, 1 more for perm ban) [50-75]

I've simply given up trying to bot this location.

Agreed. Plus its quite anticlimatic how they are only killing "obvious" bots such as aviansie/green dragon bots.

Checked my main and my alt, didn't get banned. I did stop botting on both accounts 1 week prior to the public announcement.
