What's the point? Embarrasing others? Wannabe moderating?
I don't get it.
Let moderators and admins do their job.
NO
Have you read what I wrote? Here, read this , post #29 and on.
http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15174
I didn't read all of that, or much at all, but good job on all this. Hard work, not much in return except the respect of members of the community ;)
I'm really against this. It would be better if you would just send them private message and tell them what they did wrong. But right now you are just labeling people noobs and insulting them. Everybody makes mistakes.
Would you like if my sig would say "LORDGREGGREG IS NOOB!"?
^^
I completely agree here. Most of the time when somone gets a noob point they just skip right over it. It would be much more beneficial and MATURE for our community to be helpful and explain what a person did wrong. Instead I see SRL members issuing noob points like there is no tomorrow. In fact, if you are giving away noob points you are pretty much flaming people (outside of the flame forum) therefore you yourself should receive a few. There is absolutely nothing constructive coming out of this system. I think it is just a bunch of 14 year olds trying to assert their "power" over others. And like Secet said, everyone makes mistakes. This does not become a problem until they make many mistakes and don't change.
EDIT: At the moment your system doesn't even seem to be working anyway.
yes everyone makes mistakes, and these are temporary reminders to cut it out.
look, i have been in ALL of my signatures, ALL accros thjis forum saying that I am a noob, at least.. what? three tiems now?
i have ever reported myself for making an oftopic post on accadent.
i feel that this siystem works bettter, a proivate mesage may not be read, not to mention it is harder, and if it is read, thats just one person saying they dont like that.
this gives solid links in the report, this actualy humiliates them, and makes them feel bad for a bit.
lets go back to the spanking anaolgy. a pm would be like wrting your child a letter not to draw on the wall.
this ssystem is like a short spanking instead.
meh getting noobpoints doesnt really do anything, its just like getting told not to do it again, and its also makes sure everyone know what you did and its a reminder to you too.
I dont think you can get banned by getting noobpoints tho you can get banned if someone doesnt like one of your post so just live with the noob points. Besides their down right now.
[/quote]what makes you thnk that? everything i have seen shows that they dont. what evidence do you have? mine is people comenting on it... or trying to make their posts better.i agree, this si a key point of the noob system, and exactly what i am trying to have happen. Did you read my post where i have the admin aplication? you should looook at it, and see what is the expectation.well, this may be trtue, i just added a few admins and im not sure if they are mature or have enough time to handle it, dont worry i will be prunning the system very quickly. If you actualy believe in what you say, please tell me what noob points were issued wrong ly, and i will fix it.no, noob points are not a flame, and they arent suposed to be unless they are done wrong. they are suposed to be a constructive reminder to ask better questions, followed by an on topic link to fix thier problem, or an explanation of what they missed.no, there really is, once again i apologize about the new admins, but i know that most every of the noob points i have made have helped some one, for the reason i have already stated above, both in this thread, and the admin form thread, if you dont understand, please read them, or alse read the index page of the noob points too.mabey it is to a few of the new admins. prove it to me and i will fix it ofcourse. It is not to me, i am genuinly trying to be helpfull and mold these noobs into a smarter, more mature force, that will evnetually be able to do enough reaserch to learn to script on their own.thts why these are just temporary. I have made mistakes to, and gotten noob points for them.yes, the noob points system is designed to work with that, it keeps a cumilative track of their noob points, humiliting them porportionally each time.i have already made a thread about the system being down.
Ok, well I understand you have put a lot of work into this but the system has many flaws yet.
-First, the system is completely biased. I find that regular users receive much more noob points for a mistake than do SRL Members. For example, I have seen a few pointless posts by you in this thread (I think I saw a double post...maybe) and also a post in all caps. However, you have yet to receive any points for any of these offenses. Another great example of this bias is here. Sky would have never received the points if he hadn't asked for them. And yet another example is here where Smartkidz makes an entirely useless post, however, it is overlooked and only IngaNarf is reported. One more example here where the SRL Member/Noob Point user posts "Give it 2 asprins and call me in the morning." while the non-SRL Member posts something more sensible, "Oh yeah, try buying a ram chip. If you are using up too much ram... this is the answer. " Ill let you guess who got reported. You should be able to figure it out by now. In fact, I'll be surprised if I don't receive noob points for just posting against it.
-I guess I'll be going on to my next point now. Like I said earlier, there are certain people who will report at the drop of a hat and not think twice about it.
Example 1 - Well this one I think is pretty unfair. I think calling bet's post "useless" is just not right. He was expressing himself exactly like that forum is supposed to be used. It was a one line poem but SO WHAT  there are such things as one line poems. And, as kaustav_002 showed, it could have easily been changed to a multi-liner with a few enters.
Example 2-What the hell? I was very angry about this one, but you seemed to have fixed it. Well at least you fixed it quickly. Still, this definitely supports my preceding paragraph.
Example 3-There is no question that this is another one that shouldn't have been issued. bobarkinator tells the poster to use the search button and/or look at the other topic. Well, I guess bobarkinator didn't really do his research because (1) try searcing "IsKeyDown" in the C/C++ forum--you get nothing and (2) the other topic was created after this one.
Example 4- Umm no, he couldn't have possibly found that by searching. Another one that should be revoked.
There are probably more however I just needed a few to prove how irresponsible your users are being with this system. After all, this is the last day of summer so I'm going to kind of speed this up a little so I can go have fun before school starts :( .
-Some of the users of this system do not take the time to explain why they are giving them noob points or how to prevent getting them. I am strongly against this method. How are they supposed to get better if they don't know what they did wrong?
Example 1-He has no problem giving them the noob points but struggles to explain what grave digging is or how to use the search button to keep from posting a useless post.
Example 2-This person attempted to explain the problem, however in doing it, they gave me a headache. The only thing I understood from that post was "Please don't make useless posts" which really isn't that helpful.
-As for being professional or mature this system is neither :S.
Example 1-I have several problems with this one. The first is that you say that " We are suposed to ignore blind anoying people like you who ask the same questions that have already been anserted before." And go on to say "The only reason Im wasting my time here is because my system is hungry." So you pretty much just reported him to be reporting him? Imo that isn't what I would call professional. This is also a great example of how this system just creates tons of spam. If you would have ignored him instead it wouldn't have created all that spam.
Example 2--It doesn't seem professional to me to type like that.
Example 3-Surprise, surprise the noob points have created another spam post! And guess what he didn't receive any points for doing it. Also note that he is an SRL Member...
Example 4-"Wow, you have gotten a total of 6 noob points today! Are you going for the record of 100?" Something about that seems kind of against the whole professional thing to me.
Example 5-Do I really have to say anything?
Example 6-Noob points aren't explained well enough to the person given them. In most thread, you can look later in the thread and find a post asking what the noob points are. Or there will be argueing whether they should have received them or not. I don't need a link to this one as it happens in most threads.
-"noob points arent that serious" Well now I am tired of getting all the links so I'll just summarize my point here. Exactly! You've got this one correct. They don't and only about half the noobs you give them to give a crap. Doesn't seem very affective now does it?
-Another majority of the noobs get really mad when you give them the points. This is probably the worst case scenario because now this is going to create a lot of spam when they argue with you. This system just isn't worth it. It causes way more spam than it prevents.
As I final statement I shall say that the main point of this system is to humiliate and humble the "noobs." The problem is that the people that need the humbling/humiliation most is your users. I have seen on many of the above posts your users being cocky because they think they have power. It seems to me that they (and maybe even you) have this idea in their head that the more noob points they give out the better of a person they are.
aww man. common, dont you know i have better stuff to do than argue about a system? It's in place, its not perfect, i know, im wokring on it.
I think generrally it is for the greater good,
sigh, ok, you took the tiem to write this, il go ahead and take the time to reply. but polease forgive me if i am breif, and to the point.
greanted, im wokring on them, and i welcome any input.relax bro, look, i know it is biased, robot are not adminitering points, therfore, by default it will be biased. Now, skys noob points were taken away. And more reports happen against non members because they plain out, act more nooby, and im my opionon, act nobbier than members.
now sure, members deserve noob points to, but really the main noob point is "not searching" that is where we can do the most good, and that is really where i focus my efforts.
oftopic posts are inevitable sometimes, and realy not worht my time to report.
thing is, noob points arent really that bad, just because some people get a reminder to do better, and others dont.. well , its not the end of the world.
we are trying to help people, and if members dont get as much help as non, im sorry. I assure you , i have no persoanl preferewnce between emmebers and non.
i aprecite you speeding up ,a dn for pointing out thoes posts. yes, i know that some poeple report noobs when it freally isnt a good time too, im wokring on that, really i am, this system is very new, and i dont know who is a good reporeter, and who is not.
this shystem is set up so where any noob can pm me, saying they have been reported wrongly, and i will fix it.
hopefully bad reports will stop hapeneing, dont worry.COMEPLTLY AGREE, in fact , i have made a thread about what is required in a noob report, and helping is required. ever admin that is now reporting has submited a form PROMISING ME that they will help the noob, or be removed formt he systemthakns for the examples, i will look into them, and adjust admins acordinglyyeah, ok , sorry, i was in a rotten mood, no one is perfect, the system hungry thing, was a joke, thats not why i was reporting him.well, look,, noob paint are going to be spam if the reporter does not leave soemthing critically helpful along with it. all admins have been instructed that if they cannot help the noob, then they will not be alowed to leave a report against them. I am still weeding out the bad admins.the link about noob points is part of the bb code in every report. if they dont knwo what noob points are, the link is provided.half is better than none. the humilitation it is intended to bring is effective, i belive. It lets annoyed members let go of their anger knowing that profesaion action has been taken, etc. The arguments.. yeah, should be taken into private mesages, i agree, or brought up with me. the system is worth it if iti si done right, like i said, every report needs to have some contructive information in it. that way it is both helpfull, and a bit humiliating, so next time, the person wil know where to get the information, and this time , they wil have already gotten help.some of the, perhaps.ive noticed that too, ill be pruning, dont worrysome may, i dont.
ok, i think the genral consesus is that bad admiins are fing this up. once i get my database back, i will fix this.
Actually...no.
That's called lightly flaming a noob who thinks he knows everything, thinks he is better than everyone, and assumes that everyone else knows nothing.
Opal, it seems that you have more of a problem with the NP admins than you do with Greg.
Just because a few (even a majority) abuse a system doesn't mean that it's bad.
Take bittorrent for example. It has completely legitimate uses. But since so many people use it for illegal activities, it is often looked upon it in a bad sense. Companies try to get bittorrent development stopped, but bittorrent is not the offender, the people uploading and seeding illegal material are the offenders.
What I'm trying to say is this: When used correctly, the noob points system works quite well.
When you see bad admins, either pm Greg about it, or pm the offending admin, and, in time, things will get straightened out.
Ehh, I don't even know why I posted that one. That one isn't really a big deal to me. Quite frankly he deserved what he got. He lied and then he failed to read the scrolling text at the top of the forums. The main point of that one was that it created all of those spam posts. But I guess that can't be helped because he was the one doing it. Anyway, my main concern is about the points that are given that aren't quite fair. Which I guess the pruning should help alot on this.Quote:

i have already send a gloabl pm to all the admins to define and modify a few things, hopefully that will help.
Thanks for your concerns.
Phew...just got done reading through the heated debates of Opal Tasty and Lordgreggreg. I, for one, agree with the noob point system, so it has my full support. Also, excellent job lordgreggreg!! :) As you can now see, I've got the 'recent noobs' in my sig :p!
