I noticed that RAM speed has a HUGE impact on VMs. When I first built my computer, it would run pretty well at the default settings. Then I changed the speed of my RAM in the BIOS from 533 to 800, and it now runs much, much better.
One other thing I did was make it so each VM only runs on 1 core. Originally I had both VMs set to use 2 cores, and I think that made them compete for CPU resources. With both set to 1 they each get their own core to run on and don't bother the other.
I suggest that people look into ram tweaking and see if they can squeeze out a little more speed in that area if you want to make your VMs run the best they can.
