I don't think that the Runescape devs would allow for the prices to drop down to being "worthless." For while it does discourage autos and encourage "combat moneymaking/adventuring," it also reduces the value of the money-making skills.

the GE is pretty good for merchanting.. since there is a variable market price.

I really Like the Grand Exchange because you can do other things when ur buying/selling items and it's really fast when i sell my steel bars making my fingers not numb ^.^

No, the economy won't be ruined. Parts of it will, true, but as a whole- no. A part that is already ruined is (obviously) Yew Longbows. Uhh, 700 each on the Exchange is a bit high, don't you think? :P

Natures are going back up to the 300's, Pure essence is coming back down because so many people are mining it now (hey, it used to be around 160 each. That's a good profit :P), so this is still a free-ish economy where supply and demand do still play a large part in pricing. :rolleyes:

I totally disagree...

The grand exchange is an example of government intervention (jagex) intervening in the free-market economy of runescape by setting a 'market price'. I have noticed a pattern that leads me to believe that this is in fact a price ceiling below the traditional market price set by the laws of supply and demand. If anyone studies economics here, they would know that that would lead to shortcomings in supply and an blow-out in demand. However, this would only apply to armour sets. I'd wager that not as many people are willing to buy resources such as coal as their market prices increased by as much as 30 gp, which is alot in bulk purchases.

It is very hard, if not impossible to manage an economy like Runescape completely by setting the prices right. A slight disparity would upset the whole balance between supply and demand. This law of supply and demand is focused around the miners and cutters and producers selling at amounts and prices that reflect how badly the manufacturers (fletchers, smithers, etc.) want the materials.

Having said that, entrepreneurism is dead to an extent, with merchanters throwing everything away in the face of a solid price. The grand exchange itself bears no resemblance to stock exchanges in the real world, with limits set on the price fluctuations. As a result, if demand for a particular item falls, the price will not be indicative of this drop so less people will buy the item. The suppliers will notice that their items are not being sold, and will decrease their prices, unaware that the real market price is beneath that set by Jagex. Slowly, people will begin to realise that the sale of that item is unprofitable and will shy away from that particular skill if no revenue is being produced.

With the decline in demand and supply, and the lack of foreign investment and government injection of capital into the economy, recession will begin and unemployment will commence in earnest. As the economy falls to ruin, and the citizens begin to tire of the poor economic and social conditions, civil unrest will be on an upward hike. Eventually, if the problem is not solved, it will reach phenomenal levels and the tyrannous government will be overthrown, with a new one elected. Hence, the land will convert from a socialist, one-party state racked by totalitarianism to a democratic and free country that elects its own leaders and rules on its own freedoms and rules.

Well...the way it is can be viewed positively you know? Such as if you offer max...and someone is selling for min... It may settle in middle, and both are happy. But i'll give you this, sometimes prices screw you over......like potions!

Its kind of like the world's stock markets and the system used to match buyers and sellers... They don't have to see each other's offers, they just set in the price they want to sell or buy for. Its completely anonymous.

The 3k trade limit has probably killed runescape. Friends and I used to swap whatever back and forth if we needed it. Now it's gay as hell. I don't see the point of placing the limit on the game. IMO it was a big fucking screw up on their part.

The trade limit now changes depending on how many quest points your got, but it only goes up to 30k IIRC, which is still pretty useless if you want to lend a friend something. However, given that we, as cheaters, are partly responsible for jagex introducing it, in my opinion we don't really have much of a right to complain

The Ge makes autoed goods quick to get rid of...I just miss being able to sell them for what I wanted.

I am pretty happy with the ge right now cause I made 1.2mil off it. It was total luck though. I bought gunthans for really low in the afternoon. Then the next day decided I didn't like it and sold for 1.2m more then bought it. :)

With the GE you can make money also, thanks to new players...
Just try it, as example with steel bars or something, buy 10k at lowest price, and whatever you get back, immediatly on the mid price -> sold.

The best it works with eyes of newt (yep, them again).
just set it to 10k eyes of newt at the lowest price, and wait, when you get them coming in, you can sell them at the same time for the highest and you're rolling :)

I believe the grand exchange makes it easier to buy and sell with ease, but I think the whole bartering system will be damaged severely. I do like how its made it easier to sell stuff quickly, but this, along with the introduction of the trade rules are going to cause the economy to become either severely stable and stagnent, or take a downward spiral due to the ever popular sell for the cheapest amount option.

Overall cool introduction, Im going to be happy to see what exactly becomes of the exchange and the economy of rs in general now.

I really dislike most of the new systems, I mean, the GE is great if youre a normal player with one account, but I have a few, including a mule that i'd make a friend trade all my stuff to for storage, and now that that 3k limit is instated....well, lets just say my d'hide is stuck on an account that cant even use it, as more for the GE, prices just keep dropping like mad! I tried selling some 10k ess, on the LOWEST, and it didnt sell, and after a few days...the lowest was 5gp lower than before. This means that all assests are also decreasing in price...darn it :(

P.S. I dont like to PK, but the new system kinda really sucks i think....

I don't really like the prices Jagex set on the first day. Because of it, I have yet to sell my 10k Maple Longbows (u) even a month later

I think that it was good that they created GE, its very simple to buy and sell stuff now, thats a big plus imo. Yeah its a little like wow AH, but still a great update. I have nothing bad to say about GE tbh, or well it could be more simple like in wow ah, i mean so you can press "buyout" and so you can see example how many d longs there is in ge that would be good.

Personally i find it very useful, especially when im questing and i need to buy some of those miniscule items. Plus you dont have to travel from bank to bank or wait for someone to pm you to sell somethin.

I don't know which side to choose about the GE. As far as merchanting goes, it makes it easier for me, as I don't have to do any work. Just Buy 130m gp worth of something at lowest price, then turn around and sell it for a few gp higher. Profit. As far as armour goes, being a rune smither I'm pretty hacked about it. If you buy the bars for the GE price, you lose money no matter what you are making, because the ore/bar prices are too high, yet the armour prices are too low. That goes for any type of armour. Lastly, you can't make armour sets from notes, so if you want to sell alot of sets, thats alot of trips.

i think this really screwed up the economy of RS, within a few days of the update prices of just about everything dropped, either that or after a while itll the supply and demand will even out a lil, so i guess it could help after a while....

i kinda like the GE cuz with some luck u can score big but its just going to run prices into the ground:( and make rares worth WAY more... but it does make buy and selling alot easier... so i sill dont know what to think of it quite yet

I hate it. Economy will die over time, and everything is harder. Way more cons then pros...

wow this update killed trading for me. What happened to the good old days where clever salesmanship can earn the seller an incredibly disproportional buttload of gp?
