Remote Control Your Computer

This guide is for anybody who might travel a lot or are almost never able to get to the computer where their auto is running.
Everything in this guide is completely free although you can upgrade the software for various costs.

A working email address
24 megabytes of free space on you hard drive
An Internet connection

Installing LogMeIn:
1. Go to http://logmein.com/
2. Click “Create New Account”

P.S. Check your email address for an activation letter… it may take a day… but you can still use your account without activation.

Viewing your computer:
1. Got to http://logmein.com/ and make sure you're logged in, then click my computer

2. Click the computer name you entered during installation

Some Stuff You Can Do to Control Invisibly:
1. install it some place other than the program files.
2. delete logmeinsystray.exe
3. delete logmein from the start menu
4. when in the control menu
-go to preferences
-go to remote control settings
-check the boxes next to the following phrases:
*Disable host keyboard and mouse
*Blank the host's monitor
*Full Control (and Remote Control D) access rights bypass interactive user's permission:
-uncheck *Ask for permission from interactive user
5. go to preferences
security settings
Access control
uncheck *Display "Enable/Disable LogMeIn" option on the system tray menu
6. preferences
advanced options
check *Remote Control notification window cannot be closed

go to preferences
then reboot options

Ah yes, the great LogMeIn! I've been using the free version for about a month and it is pretty amazing. Good tutorial btw...even though I already have it :p

I was wondering about the features... How much can you exactly do with it? Like say what it can/can't do out of the following things...

1) Power on/off
2) Download files and use them
3) Does it like control the mouse or...?

i currently use this in order to get to my basement computer from my laptop, and this was a very detailed and accurate tut on how to do it. nice job ░░░░

you can turn it off but not on... your computer must be on already to use this... you can do every thing you can normally do on your computer... you just control it through a java applet on the web that you can access... and you can click on the screen but i dont think it controls the mouse since you can setup meeting on your computer with it... and you can transfer items throught the clip board

So from what I understand you basically can click and type and all that, you just can't do stuff that you wouldn't be able to do with just a mouse and keyboard, right?

What do you mean by 'setup meeting on your computer'? And could I do something like this -

Say I have a very good computer (ex: 200GB HDD, 2GB RAM, and a good video card) on one computer, and I set it up with this logmein thing. Then I go to some old, crappy computer and start remote controlling the good computer. Could I run RAM hungry applications (like games and such) on the old computer without stressing it? in other words would I just be watching my good comp run the stuff, or would the old comp be running the stuff too, making it unable to run RAM hungry applications?

ummm... what other important input devices are there other than mouse and computer... basically you do the open my computer steps then after you click remote control a java applet will open and you will see the computer you are accessing... you can whatever you could do as if you were siting at the computer... just you are controlling it from a java applet in your internet browser...

what i mean by a meeting is... since this program was designed for bussinesses... you can have a chat between the computer you are accessing and the computer you are on...

p.s. even though you cant see it... this whole thing is run throguh your internet and you internet browser

Other input device (or somewhat like them :p) - Power button on your tower, microphone/WebCam, monitor on/off button, and maybe a few more.

Thats awesome! Ok a few more questions....

1) Do you think if I had a video game CD in the computer (The one I'm not next to) I could play the game?

2) Can you put the computer in Stand-by and then make it wake up?

3) If somebody happened to come up to the computer I'm remote controlling, would they see exactly what I'm doing?

4) Do you have to download anything on the computer you're using as the remote control?

well it only say i have gotten 1 point so far and i have a total of 11 now... anyway why would you tell anyone you pass in the first place... happy remote controlling... i guess :p... anyway i also got to go in like 5 mins...

i dont think so since it appears in the tray and they can right click and disable it so you cant access the computer until they turn logmein back on...

Oo, nice tutorial. I've been using VNC, all I do is run the server on my computer, then go to school and type in my IP address in the address bar, and I login and I can control my computer from Internet Explorer.

I'll try this though, my way is laggy (when opening Runescape and playing or something) but it works.

Is your way laggy too?

not at all when i use it... and i have some pretty slow computers... like 996 mhz 384 mb ram and it still runs perfectly fine

LogMeIn lags for me when I use it from work .. but, it's an awesome tool to maintain your Army when you aren't at home to do it yourself :) I went to Thailand for Christmas .. set up Munk's Forefeathers before I left .. was able to check it every day using LogMeIn to re-set my Falses and start it again after an update.

Hm, logmein.com is blocked at my school. Going to that website is the only way to access your computer remotely, right?

idk... i havent tried it yet since i have like a sever cold so ive been out for the past 4 days and tomorrow too...

but yeah the website is the only way access it....

if its too laggy you can go to either the properties of setting or something when you are in the menu to remote you computer... and change it to a different program applet to see if it will run faster for you...

i've been using this for a month now and i still recommend it to people...
its works awesome with VM too...

You all should try windows remote desktop (aka. RDP) if you have XP Pro (Or Vista Business and greater I believe).

And, RDP may not be blocked from your schools.
(Unless you have a power hungry network Nazi like the one at my school)

i just use portable tor and portable firefox to bypass the school school block... i have it all downloaded to my flash drive...

yeah and much, much more... you can basically control your computer from another computer...

yeah it lags some but overall its a great program... its fun to use your computer from school... but you need to use a proxy...
