How to 'Grab' Music from Pandora

NOTE: If you read this and use it, post a 'Thank you' along with whether you got it to work or not. If not, post the problem and I may be able to help.

What is Pandora?

For those of you who don't know, Pandora (www.pandora.com) is an online radio that plays only songs you like. You input your favorite song/artist, and it will play only songs that have similar qualities to the song/artist you said. This is very handy for finding new bands or artists.

Some of the great things about Pandora are...

1) Fill up your MP3 player easily with all of these new people you find
2) The song choice that it plays is amazing
3) You can skip songs
4) You can tell it to not play a song or songs with similiar qualities that is currently playing
5) (opposite of above) You can tell it to play songs more like the one it's currently playing
6) If you get bored of one of the songs it plays, you can tell it to not play it for a month

However, there are many drawbacks to Pandora too...

1) You cannot replay a song
2) You cannot choose what song you want to play
3) You can only skip a certain amount of songs per hour (I think it's 10)
4) Worst of all, you cannot download the songs

This is where Pandora's Jar comes in...

What is Pandora's Jar?

Pandora's Jar is a program that lets you 'Grab' and save mp3's from Pandora.

8.1.1 Pandora Jar Download

Onto setting it up...

NOTE: You must have Firefox to run this program

First, download this extension for Firefox. It's the flash switcher (you need Flash 8 rather than Flash 9 to use Pandora's Jar). To install the extension to Firefox, just open the downloaded "flash_switcher_1.0.0.xpi".

Now click on the icon for it, and click the 8.0 button

Now go to the Pandora Jar zip file you downloaded earlier. Extract the files. If you are on Windows, open the pandora.bat file. If you are on a Mac, open the pandora.jar file.

Now just listen to your radio. When you hear a good song, click 'Grab This Track'.

Lower down there are your settings. You can set up an account at Pandora so it remembers your stations. You can set where the Grabbed songs go to. And finally, you can set whether you want the songs to go straight to iTunes.

WARNING: If you skip songs (i.e. you click the fast forward thing), when you grab a song, you might get the wrong one, and the name will be messed up too.

Troubleshooting

If you can't get Pandora's Jar to work (whether it be errors in the DOS window or it just isn't downloading the songs), get Firefox 2.0.0.5. And also do this...

1) Uninstall Adobe Flash Player
2) Install Adobe Flash Player 8

But why Firefox Firefox 2.0.0.5? Firefox updates to Firefox 2.0.0.12 automatically.

Not sure. It worked for me. Then it updated and it still works lol.

Uh-oh. I pmed Nielsie a few hours ago about posting this, then he logged off, so I asked Hobbit. He said yes, so I posted. Not too long ago Nielsie pmed me back saying I can't. Read it quick before I have to take it down! ;)

It is lol. And I asked if I could tell people a way to download the music from it. Now that you see exactly what it is, do I have to take it down?

i only get a window that says, yay lets go rip some music or something like that. I dont get that window you got. Also i get an error that it cant find firefox.exe

Yeah, there should be a window that says that. If it doesn't open in Firefox, try refreshing or clicking the 'try again' button if there is one(happened to me a few times when the program's window opened but firefox said 'Unable to connect'). And did you try the troubleshooting things?

i guess i can kinda get it to work but it shows the stuff up wierd. Like the box for pandora is too small to see anything and the button doesnt show rip and stuff(this is with clicking the fiefox link, not the other thing. cuz the .bat doesnt do anything except show that message). I did the troubleshooting stuff and googled it. Though if i cant get this to work i can just do the same thing for last.fm(they have something like that for ripping the songs

The .jar file doesn't work too well on windows as you mentioned. What happens when you click the .bat file? The message pops up and then what? Does it say that it had an error? Does Firefox show up but not open it?

EDIT: 80 views, 7 replies....*sigh*...Leechers these days...

when i click the .bat it tells me that it doesnt know what application 'firefox' is and then it opens a window that says. "something...blah
some port has opened at 8524 or something
we are ready to rip some mp3s"

that doesnt work so i click on the firefox link, and i think it shows whatever is supposed to show up, but its all wierd without any background and the window for pandora is too small.

then i googled and it told me to get greasemonkey and make a script for it to do, but installed the script and it doesnt let me run it :(

Hmm, I don't really know what the problem is.

That's where I found all of this, try their troubleshooting if any applies to you. If not, look through the thread and see if anybody had the same problem.

@redmans

Yup, you can put this music your iPod. When using it, either make it automatically get the songs to iTunes, or make them go to a file and then add the files to your iTunes library.

Thanks got this to work for me, its really cool. I've never heard of pandora before but I like it. I usually just use last.fm, but I'm liking this a bit more. Thanks man!

Hey guys I found a bug :\

If you skip songs, when you grab a song it might grab the wrong one and put the wrong title and stuff for it.... I just had to erase 30 songs b/c of this lol.

I think problem people are having is the fact that you also need to install the extension Greasemonkey and this greasemonkey script:

Huh? You can't get your username to work? Try not using a username or if worst comes to worst, just set the station up when you open it.

The music is saved wherever you tell it to in the settings below the radio. You don't need a last FM account. I would try installing Firefox 2.0.0.5 to run it, then even when it updates it should still work (weird but it works :p). If that doesn't help try the other troubleshooting stuff.

I was reading how you were complaining about leechers...take a look at the views on my thread on removing DRM. Over 2.2k views...all in 5 days or however many. Writing this on my phone lol

:eek::eek: That has to be like the most leeched thing ever...But mine's 2nd :p (in this section anyway)

What might be happening to yours is that people keep going back? But still, a few thousand views and only 20 replies is a bit too low :p

Nope, the views are all unique...You can't keep refreshing the thread to bring up the view count.

EDIT: Hmm, it was 361, I went to the thread, then went to Multimedia tuts, and it was 362. I went on quickly to see if anyone else was viewing, and nobody was. :p

Hi. I have a mac and have been struggling for hours to get pandora jar to work. I have followed the directions perfectly...I have greasemonkey and the script, flash switcher, everything is all set. When I go to start pandora jar everything appears to be fine except 2 Things:
1. I get a message saying failure to launch port 8085...address already in use in the terminal, but the program still loads
2. Once Pandora Jar loads the "grab this track" button doesn't work!

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Pandora's Jar uses port 8085 to run, but I don't know what could be causing it to fail...

I looked on google, it doesn't seem like too many people have this problem, here's something that might help -

FIX!
just figured it out....
Type in "cd c:\pandora" (Without Quotes)

Now type "java -jar pandora.jar 8085" (Without Quotes)

A blue screen should show up saying something about "Now were ready to rip Mp3's" something like that.

Now Minimize that and everything else. Open up Firefox and type this exactly: "http://localhost:8085" (Without Quotes)

do that and your in business......

I'm not completely sure, but I think this guy was having the reversed problem. He wasn't able to load 80 and fixed to 8085, so maybe you shoudl try the opposite? But I don't know really, sorry...

i don't get what your comaining about the "said veiws" Vs "said replies"
at least your thread isn't being spammed to death? and a much higher veiw count over replies i perfectly normal.
